Hello,
I've got a question regarding installation of the current Oolite v1.80 to Windows Vista. Was it correct to install it in the administrator profile? I used to play the older versions a couple of years ago and had no real problems, but coming back to the new version, I have installed it in the admin profile fine. In my regular profile, I do not have any start menu entries for Oolite. Should I create these manually, or uninstall & re-install Oolite in the user profile itself.
Many thanks,
Blaze359

Re: Installing Oolite on Win Vista - Start Menu
Welcome aboard, amigo! I'm not familiar with Vista, but on Win 7, I install Oolite direct to the C: drive (or whichever partition).
Hopefully, someone will be along with a better answer soon. It used to be that avoiding Program Files was a good idea in Vista though.

Re: Installing Oolite on Win Vista - Start Menu
I'm familiar with installing to various folders on the C: drive, having used some emulators that don't have an installation program. I had set up the C:/oolite folder prior to installation, but by installing in Administrator, the start menu items are in Administrator - not in my personal profile/login. Could it be that the installer only sets up the menu for the active login at the time of install?
Thanks,

Sounds like it. Log in as admin, set show hidden folders on, and check in C:/User Files/ for the public profile. A logged in user sees whatever is in their profile, plus whatever is in the public profile.Blaze359 wrote:I had set up the C:/oolite folder prior to installation, but by installing in Administrator, the start menu items are in Administrator - not in my personal profile/login. From what I recall from playing around with the Windows installer script to create a Trunk installer some time back, I think you're probably correct. Incidentally, there should be no need to install Oolite as Administrator anyway.. certainly I never did back when I was running Vista.Blaze359 wrote:by installing in Administrator, the start menu items are in Administrator - not in my personal profile/login. Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

I concur - I installed v1.80 under Vista to C:\ drive in my "standard" login account, no problems.Diziet Sma wrote:From what I recall from playing around with the Windows installer script to create a Trunk installer some time back, I think you're probably correct. If you install Oolite on admin account, you won't get Start Menu shortcuts in regular account. Just install it on your regular account - there's nothing Oolite needs admin privileges for.

Thanks for the advice, I have re-installed in my user login and it looks OK. Just now need to fix an anti-virus program which is running the CPU at 50% even when idle .

I use AVG. Even the the free version is decent for protection.
