Just randomly remembered a school friend had a C64 and we spent a LOT of time on the Gauntlet port. I have never seen such bravery!
(I've just had an idea for an audio OXP... )

Spectrum owner here too.

Lords of Midnight and Doomdark's Revenge were big favourites along with the Ultimate games such as KnightLore and Alien8.

Space wise I recall Code name Mat, Dark Star and TimeGate, along with Starion.

Never had a 16 bit machine, so games lapsed until X-Wing came along on the PC.

Cheers,

Drew.

That bridges an era for me (as a child looks at it). Both the Amstrad CPC464 and the Amiga 500 were light years apart back then. I got really right into Elite on the Amiga so i guess that's the one, although I did play in on the CPC. Cannon Fodder, Stealth Fighter, FA18 Interceptor, A-train, The Chaos Engine, Alien Breed, Worms (maybe a bit later?).

I also spent a lot of time in Revs, Infiltrator, Thrust, and The Sentinel (of which there is, like Elite, a modern, freeware (not open source) remake in "Zenith")

Also played a lot of Impossible Mission and Thing on a Spring, which you could only play with the cheat code. And Hacker.

Had to reach back into the neurons for this one:

When I first played Elite – on my friend’s C64 – I still owned an Atari game station! But at university I played a few arcade games regularly: Caveman, Defender and Joust (one of my favourites). When the family got an Amiga-500, I scored an hacked version of Elite, but elsewise Ports of Call, Silent Running, Flight Simulator, Leaderboard Pro (golf simulator), Zany Golf, Battlechess, several text adventure games – I fondly remember Hitchickers Guide, Leisure Suit Larry, later Bard’s Tale and Space Quest. Later (read 90's); was into Tornado (fighter jet simulator) - but any flight simulator worth it's wings - Wolf-3D, Doom, Transport Tycoon, TIM, Worms, but the Amiga was still working, so Elite wasn't far away

Off screen I was right into RPG’s D&D, Traveller, Space Opera, Spycraft, Bushido, Boot Hill? – there were a few others trialled by the RPG group I was with. Board games Imperium (space war game) and Kingmaker (War of the Roses).

Phew, pulling those out was hard on the old grey matter :?

What else did we play back then?
I had only C64 until I went to University 1995, got a glimpse of 16bit stuff on my friend's Amiga & older sister's 386 a few years before that.

The list would be LONG  , but here are a few that I have most fond memories of:

C64
Boulder Dash (various versions & the Construction Kit)
Wizard of Wor
Racing Destruction Set
Soccer (later Emlyn Hughes International Soccer)
David's Midnight Magic Pinball
Pitstop & Pitstop II
Blue Max
Silent Service
Test Drive
International Karate
Pirates!
Airborne Ranger
The Great Giana Sisters
Nemesis the Warlock (for the music)
Typhoon of Steel
Space Rogue
Pool of Radiance
Curse of the Azure Bonds
Secret of the Silver Blades
Battleships
...and keep it under lightspeed!

Friendliest Meteor Police that side of Riedquat

I remember playing this till the score counter reached the limit. This was really addictive.

Now this was a classic. Countless hours wasted with with this game with C64 and Amiga500.

Same here, and most recently on iPad.

I know I am a bit late to this... But after Elite, I suppose I like WordStar..

Erm OK... On the CPC 6128 The Sentinel and Marsport... But mostly just played Elite, it was like a 2nd career!. On my Atari ST and Amiga, I don't think I got into the games so much. For me it was the start of graphics over gameplay (saying that my old Amiga A1000 is still the most beautiful looking computer ever made). On the PC Tie Fighter CD Rom Edition.... My fav all time game after Oolite / Elite!

The Sentinel was pretty damn cool.. and quite groundbreaking, in its day.. I remember playing it on the Amiga.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

+1

I still have mine out in the shed, in its original box. And with every keyboard I use I always think, "I wish this was like the Amiga keyboard". Every time.

Sentinel... what an amazing game that was. I remember playing it on the Spectrum for hours and hours. Did you know that there is a very nice remake of it with OpenGL and stuff? Check out Zenith.

No, I didn't know about that.. many thanks! 8)

Edit: Seems to run fine under Wine, too! :D

I wasn't born until late 1987 so I have only heard of about a handful of these games!

The first game I remember playing was this:

Then probably either Elite or Frontier, I can't remember which one I played first.

There are a couple of ZX Spectrum games that I still enjoy playing on my Speculator emulator... namely Starquake and Highway Encounter.
