What happened to GalCop?

Post by byronarn »

I was reading the Ollite wiki'snarticle on the Empire. It states:
The now-vanished Galactic Co-operative of Worlds once shared thier system space as the latter organisation offered more attractive benefits to former Empire members.
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Empire
Reading the article on GalCop, however, mentions nothing of it's fall or vanishing. What happened?

If the answer is in the Oolite saga (http://www.drewwagar.com/books/oolitesaga/), however, please don't spoil it for me (I just now started reading Status Quo). Just state that the answer is in the saga . Thanks!

I don't think there's a straightforward answer to that question. Keep reading though as I don't want to spoil it for you.

It does hint at what happened, but for more details of the theory that wiki article is based on you want Selezen's timeline.

Heh... explaining how mankind became the only species in the Frontier/First Encounters universe... snicker.

Honestly, I think Elite has to exist in its own little world, with Frontier/First Encounters/Elite:Dangerous simply rewriting the book where Elite is concerned where things don't work, rather than trying to say that billions and billions of sentient aliens decided to leave our galaxy more or less all at once. That's some serious square peg into round hole stuff that even I'd be hesitant to take on ;)

Does anyone know if Elite: Dangerous has (or will have) a different timeline worked out?

ED takes place after FFE and some things in the previous canon are retconned (such as a mention of anti-gravity in Dark Wheel novel)

If I am not mistaken, Frontier has mostly adopted Selezen's timeline for Elite Dangerous. Check out this link for some more information.

History has been revised - as will happen.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

As did Hari Seldon - using Psychohistory.

Having gone through a good number of the early lave radio episodes I believe I might be able to help with this one (because you don't want to go through 70 odd hours of audio, you really really don't)

Well from the writers forum it looks like the original species are being "dialed back" to the most sentient life forms on THAT planet. So parrot or sprout if you win the brain game on that rock you were mentioned! ALL are considerered to be MUCH less intellegent than humans for the sake of dangerous.

I think we need to drive this bus to Mexico! We have sentient races, (Captain H is the bomb) but we have some major discrepancies. We have Drews work which should be recognised but he was trying to reconcile a world that as been disavowed in relation to revised cannon (not that he knew that at the time he was just trying to stitch it all together). In short there is a job to do here, question is who is man enough to help take it on? To fix the flaws and give oolite back to the fiction writers, galcop intact, species intact. We are in danger of getting knotted up here. It needs work, it needs fixing.

The time line has been adjusted, keeping as close to the existing material as possible. Where existing material conflicts directly with itself or with anything that might appear in Dangerous it has been dropped or adjusted to fit.

So who wants to help me fix this? :D

This! In my opinion, there has never been, and should never be, any connection between the Elite/Oolite universe and the Frontier universe - oil and water!

You see it was fine. When there was ambiguity, I mean no offence when I say until the kickstarter this was an old game, surrounded by maybes and might bes. Possiblies but probably nots. So the cannon became defocused, hazy, like an uncared for garden that had a cluttered beauty.

With renewed interest (and money) order and focus was required. The garden of Elite is being weedwacked back into shape gentlemen, like it or not. Our garden needs separation, game wise we have it and Fronteer do not appear to want us gone (we would be C.A.D. by now) I assume we are "good advertising" for the newer Dangerous experience (I hope, after the release of Dangerous they will look kindly upon us. Although that is a hope). Fiction wise we are in a shambles!

If we are "nostalga" that found another way it should be proclaimed. Elite was the base, then it was opened up to the players, to make the world as THEY wished it to be, so oolite was born.

You see a gap in the game, you make an oxp. So if you see a gap in the fiction: It's time to write a story.

I can't fix this on my own; I'm a selfish writer prone to a nasty mary sue slant that I find as addictive as crack, but we can. I don't want to set the world on fire (this time), but we, together as writers can fix this. so who's interested?

Good luck to anyone trying to repair the damage! It certainly won't be me - fiction-wise, I'm burnt-out!

It's many, many years since I read the series, but I seem to recall that Hari did predict The Mule, which was why he set-up the Second Foundation - or am I wrong?
