I've been following the progress of ED rather closely. Looks great so far! I'd prob'ly wind up getting a copy.

Despite what Dave says I just know the multiplayer side of it is going to attract psychopathic shitbags with no goal in their sad little lives but to make others miserable. That's the nature of multiplayer games. I hear that there's a singleplayer mode in it, so I won't have to be bothered with jerks.
Let the jerks take their nazi complexes out on each other. Ha!
The way I see it, though... if the multiplayer is in a galaxy sized playground, it will be easy to simply avoid any systems they're in. All the more reason to explore the frontier and leave the core worlds to the jerks ;)

I'm willing to bet there is an analogy to be made to real world colonization from our past here ;)
I have been taking the liberty of going through Lave radio (there up to 70 hours so no mean feat!) and it looks like for taking people out you'll be tagged, the cargo will be tagged, the bounties will be hefty and the vipers appear to be REAL nasty. This will push the bandits out of the core and onto the better known trade routes.

It looks like Fronteer don't want another eve clone and they're going to have regular updates to fix the holes that people exploit.

I wonder how difficult it'd be to double our lasers for added coolness?

I LOL'ed, but seriously, split LT rate by two? :D

And do you need two keys to operate them in E:D or one?

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: You've got two fire buttons and you get to choose which weapons are fired with which buttons. So you can assign all your weapons to one fire button, or split them between the two. Such an arrangement is called a "firegroup", and you can set up several firegroups and cycle between them.

Two fire buttons. I wonder if that'd be possible in Oolite, with separate laser temp dials of course? Because two lasers are doubly as cool as one!

Watching the youtube videos on ED posted by it's test pilots, I've noted...
- All ships have forward firing weapons. There's no side or rear mounted guns.
- Depending on the ship, there can be a mixed number of weapons. For examples, the starting Sidewinder mounts two, the Hauler one, the Eagle three, the Cobra 3 sports four, the Anaconda packs serious heat with eight mounted guns.
- Some ships can mount point defense turrets as well. That's a good thing, as there appears to be no ECM as we know it.
- There's missiles, but instead of being carried on hull pylons, come packed in a launcher which replaces one of your guns.
- Guns come in a broad variety. There's pulse, burst, and beam laser systems, a kind of gatling cannon, and a "railgun" which I'm not sure is an energy weapon or not: It spits out a beam like lasers, yet takes a long time to recharge, but it's supposed to be insanely powerful. There's also target tracking versions of the above.
- Weapons are installed on retractable hardpoints, which must be deployed before engaging hostiles, then retracted before using ED's version of J drive or witchspacing. Much like our weapons safe key. Cargo scoops are also retractable, and appear to come as standard installations on most ships.

I'm thinking of creating an account on Frontier forums - is it worth it if I'm not gonna be able to play E:D, probably ever?

A few things I've noticed:
1) using their assets/ideas for non-commercial projects is allowed provided they are attributed.
2) E:D version of Torus uses fuel
3) fuel can have different qualities and therefore the jump range may differ
4) your wingmen may betray you - something to consider for Hired Guns OXP?

You may as well join.. the forums do cover more than just E:D, even if that's where most of the action is, of late..

Now that IS good to know.. do you have a link we can reference?
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied
