show us your setup.

Post by spud42 »

sorry to start a new thread if this has been done before. But a quick search didnt turn up anything so i thought i woud start one.

In the fiction section Mossfoot linked to one of his blog posts showing off his office. I thought it inappropriate to derail that thread with any replies so i will start this thread instead.

well here is where i spend my computing time....

Image

Netbook is an Acer Aspire One 8.9"screen dual boots debian and win7 , showing Oolite running on debian wheezy.

the dual monitors are on my main PC which is several gens old.

More tweaking to the Oogle transporter and reading the BBS......

I have shown you mine now show me yours!!
Arthur: OK. Leave this to me. I'm British. I know how to queue.

Since it was mentioned, here's mine: http://www.noahjdchinnbooks.com/2013/05 ... -be-right/

I've made some improvements since then and really should make an updated post :D

After a quick tidy-up of my desk, (aka - my flat filing cabinet) I grabbed this.. (and if you don't believe it's been tidied up, too bad.. )

Image

Let's see.. items of interest..

From left to right, bottom to top - Wireless headset, Asus laptop, which boots 2 versions of Windows, and 3 flavours of Linux, monitors and keyboard to a now rarely used clunky old desktop machine, running yet another version of Linux, bluetooth mouse, Saitek Cyborg joystick, 1TB external drive, assorted junk including numerous pens and USB thumb drives, padlocks and lockpicks, two pairs of reading glasses, black coffee (brain-fuel!), scientific calculator, pocket multimeter, battery charger, microfibre cleaning cloth, various odds'n'ends, an LED torch, lots of bits of paper with notes scrawled on them, and a rarely used mousepad. Temporarily tucked behind the monitors so as not to obscure things for the photo, is a chart of G1.

Next shelf up we have my inkjet printer/scanner with bulk ink tanks fitted (saves me a fortune!) assorted disks and beer holders, and yes, a genuine paper model of a Coriolis Station, courtesy of Frontier's website! Just visible on the shelf above that is some game cases, a pack of screen-wipes, my ouija board and tarot cards, bulk packs of blank CDs and DVDs, plus a large selection of computer hardware and cables, including about a dozen hard drives of various sizes and capacities (mostly behind the games and wipes).

Oh dear.

Left to right then: Micro$oft headphones and mic, with attached EDtracker, Elite Dangerous pin next to Oolite pin, Thrustmaster HOTAS throttle, BG testing kit, last year's iMac, spare reading specs, emergency shaver, money and drugs, Thrustmaster HOTAS stick. And below, Apple wireless keyboard (good) and wired mouse (better than Apple wireless mouse) on BRM P57 mousepad.

When I'm in Windows 8.1 (for ED, but I also play Oolite there) I also use Voice Attack for a number of controls (very cool shouting "WItchdrive Engage!" at the machine.)

Oh hey, you have the same Thrustmaster joystick as me!

I just recently busted the throttle's resistance :( Now it's a limp noodle. Need to figure out how to fix it.

I had one of the older versions of that Thrustmaster. It's sensors weren't the greatest; persistent drift in the x/y/roll axis developed which made flying nippy ships an annoying experience at best.

I moved up to an X-52. The difference is night and day! I highly recommend that piece of kit.
Running Oolite buttery smooth & rock stable w/ tons of eyecandy oxps on:
ASUS Prime X370-A
Ryzen 5 1500X
16GB DDR4 3200MHZ
128GB NVMe M.2 SSD (Boot drive)
1TB Hybrid HDD (For software and games)
EVGA GTX-1070 SC
1080P Samsung large screen monitor

Neat! Nice to see a desk that's not one of the usual boring colours.

there ya go Dizzy taking over again... lol

i didnt bother to clean my desk. it was secondhand when i got it ten years ago... its entitled to a bit of wear..... we have fought our way through Morrowind,Oblivion,Skyrim,Fallout 3,Fallout newvegas, several iterations of minecraft, and thousands of hours reading and replying to forums.

now for a quick rundown as the others have and i skipped over most of it.....

the left monitor was an ebay purchace recently $30 i think , the main samsung was bought new 10 or so years ago, got an old DSE surround amp system as sound, assorted USB,SD PS2 cards/sticks to the right. and the main thing i love about where we built the house.... top middle left NBN fibre router( technically the fibre NTD is in the garage) 100/40 and speedtest gives me 98/37 most days..... keyboard is a Logitech G11, great for the macro keys . but lousy for typing always missing keypresses in fact it just missed the space between but and lousy!!

And no im not the Stig, just his astronaut cousin....
