Couldn't install Compton. Got this error:

Code: Select all

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
compton : Depends: libconfig9 but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
Tried installing libconfig9 but got this:

Package libconfig9 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'libconfig9' has no installation candidate
Soooo not sure what to do about all that...

You're running 14.04, you said?
I'm pretty sure your Chromebook is 64bit.. If so, you can download and install a .deb file for 64bit-14.04 here:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/trusty/amd ... g9/1.4.8-5

Once that's installed, Compton should go in with no problems.

Alrighty. Now we're getting somewhere! (I tried finding the 32 bit on my own but didn't have luck, thanks!)

I need to check something, though. It says to create a .compton.conf file and specifically locate it as such: "~/.compton.conf".

Is ~/ the indication for the "home" section, or where should I be putting this file? Also, was it okay to copy past it using gedit or should I have used a different text editor?

Yes.. that refers to the root of your "home" folder. The dot "." in front of the filename means it will be a hidden file, not visible unless you select "Show hidden files" in the "View" menu of your File Manager. And using any text editor you like is fine.. Linux is much more sane than Windows, in that regard.

Okay, so far as I know I've done EVERYTHING that the instructions said... and it's still not working. Checked the latest.log and still have:

Code: Select all

20:31:08.277 [display.initGL]: V-Sync requested.
20:31:08.278 [display.initGL]: ----- WARNING: Could not enable V-Sync. Please check that your graphics driver supports the [GLX_SGI/GLX_MESA]_swap_control extension.
So what am I doing wrong?

I am not a Linux user, but here are a few thoughts:

Looking at your log, your gfx drivers are missing an extension that is required for enabling v-sync. The text of the warning tells you exactly which is that. So in theory, you cannot have v-sync with the present drivers. I cannot actually see how you might have had it before, unless it was somehow forced by certain apps or even the OS itself.

Anyway, feel free to take the above with a grain of salt. As I said, not a Linux user, just commenting on what I've seen on the earlier log.

if it helps I have an Acer Chromebook 720 that has had the RAM expanded and dual-boots with the full Ubuntu 14.04 (thanks to Chrubuntu). The graphics card is integrated but wasn't able to find the "stats" off hand
Some searching around turns up the detail that there seem to be quite a few variants of that model, each with different internal hardware. Could you please take a look at the manufacturer's sticker on the underside of it, and note down the exact model number, and anything else that seems relevant, then post it here, please? I want to try and nail down the exact hardware we're dealing with here.

Performing an lspci on a terminal and posting the output would also help.

Code: Select all

It's specifically a c720-2800
I see a model number listed as: zhn on the sticker somewhere.

This is the bit that we need.. thanks.

Doing some google-fu on that, I found the latest official Intel drivers for Linux for your graphics chip.. released just 6 weeks ago.. perhaps this might solve your problem..

And this is why I wanted to know the exact model.. I thought it sounded weird when you said 32-bit.. According to PCMag, that model uses the Intel Celeron 2955U CPU, which is most definitely 64-bit.. so I'm curious as to why you went with a 32-bit version of ChrUbuntu?

Heh. I'm an editor and absolutely require getting Microsoft Word on my system (no substitutes due to specific book formatting issues). However, I had nothing but problems getting 2007 or 2010 working on 64 bit via wine, and eventually just gave up and had to use a 32 bit version.

C'est la vie ;)
