G'day Typhon, and welcome aboard! 8)
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Used to be a software engineer, although that was mainly C++/C#/Delphi, so I may be up for some creativity with the game.
Welcome aboard, Typhon. Say goodbye to your loved ones, they'll not be seeing you much from now on ... :D

Hi All,

I've just discovered Oolite and I cannot thank the devs and all the modders enough. Its both a nostalgic trip to my past and a breath of fresh air.

I remember playing this back in '85 on my C64 having seen it on a friends BBC the year before, it was the first game that I stayed up all night playing, when the sun rose and the birds started tweeting (pre-Twitter) I remember being quite shocked that the time had gone so quick......but I had that Military Laser!

I recently fired up an old Spectrum 48K I have been hoarding to show my son the "good old days" and the cassette was in the box, sadly I couldn't find a tape deck! This led me to Oolite in a roundabout way.

Again, big thanks to all involved, I'm having a blast.

Cheers

A lot of the old specy games have been emulated on both mac and pc. The emulators are quick to install easy to use and come with some nice "bonuses" like snapshot saving. It is quite possible to carry an emulator, every game ever made for the specky AND all your saves (yes you can save games now by taking a complete snapshot of the ram bus of your virtual spec and it costs a wapping 16k per save!).

Hope this helps you nostalga......

I have a CD-ROM somewhere which I picked up for a couple of quid that has a Speccie emulator, a C64 emulator and just about every major game published for each on it. It was quite fun to have a total nostalgia-fest for a few weekends going through them all again...

Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy are still impossible. For anyone without extreme completion issues that is.

Re-greets. Commanders! It's been awhile. I just got back into it, fresh install of 1.8 with updated addons & a new pilot.

Derik Roh'i retired, passed the torch to the next generation. Meet Thi'ena Roh'i. :)

Thi'ena (the new commander) is the daughter of Derik & Esei; the acting Chair of Roh'i Enterprises officially, and a (usually calm) lady of means and refined tastes. She flies the late model, upgraded, and milspecced griff Fer-de-Lance Derik gifted to her - "I could've sold this bird," Derik said, "Instead, I'm passing the torch. Fly her well Thi, an' she won't let you down." Barely a month later Ti'ena is ranked Dangerous; all of her kills have been in self defense, although the pirates wind up awakening the infamous Roh'i aggression.

Thi'ena travels with her pet, a domestic breed of Ineran Mountain Dracocat named Eim'lei, a mammalian animal about the size of a medium sized dog. Raised from a cub, Eim'lei has been artificially uplifted by means of an AI nural net overlaying her nervous system; basically makes her a sentient, cyborg animal, a bit of a legal grey area. Eim'lei's intelligence makes her invaluable as a trading and business adviser.

"Ahh, pirates. They carry on like they're part of a great rebellion against an oppressive government. *pfft* A romantic notion, indeed! Yet their true nature remains evident: Since when have pirates struck when the odds didn't favor them? Never! And they cry like whelps as soon as they realize the error of attacking a well armed vessel, yes? *pfft* Vermin, below contempt!" -- Thi'ena, speaking to her stepsister Raminia

Good to see you back here, Wyvern - in whichever incarnation.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!
