Dead is Dead

Post by mossfoot »

Just curious who here plays Oolite in a "Dead is Dead" fashion? Once you die you start over? Presumably those playtesting the new versions wouldn't do that, but maybe those running the stable ones do?

We call that Ironman mode - the classic example involves starting in an Adder.
I sometimes go a whole session without saving - but I fly an iron-assed Cobra.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Has anyone thought about making that an enforceable option? For example, in Minecraft in Hardcore mode you only save when you leave the game and if you die the game is automatically deleted.

No offense but I can't understand why you'd need a enforced Iron Man mode. Just be honest. If you die, you die. If you're going to cheat, you're only lying to yourself.

No offence taken, but I do know why other games like Minecraft include that. That extra bit of oversite to fight against our natural tendency to forgive ourselves a little TOO much and then regret it later. Seems to work for Minecraft fans (me included) ;)

Besides, maybe someone could add other neat features to something like that, like somehow compiling your statistics at the point of death (credits, kills, awards, missions, etc...)

Now that side of things I could understand including in an OXP.. on the "enforcement" aspect though, from what I've seen here in discussions of Ironman play, those trying an Ironman game tend to be pretty honest about the whole thing. The problem with deleting the game-save is that you lose all data associated with that game, such as the statistics. And having Oolite insert a "dead is dead" key into the save file can be trivially bypassed by editing the save file.

I guess the short version is, there is no way to stop someone from cheating in Oolite if they really want to do so.. but the only person they're cheating is themselves, and if someone can't be honest with themselves, well...
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

I get that. And you can get around the Hardcore in Minecraft as well if you really want to. But it's still a popular feature there.
