Alas, a sign of the times on the E: D forum - five new moderators were appointed today.
They will need them, I'm afraid - not a job that I'd want, that's for sure.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Personally, having spend an inordinate ammount of time on forums that have large entries in encylopedia dramatica, I find the fronteer forum to be a bit full on at times but generally farily OK. I have gone toe to toe with some right ass holes in my youth. Wouldn't want a job trying to herd them however.
I'm wondering how Elite Dangerous is going to affect Oolite?
Will all the great Elites we have here going to jump ship for E.D.?
Will the Oolite BB start slowing down and go dark?
I finally find something good and it gets replaced?
OMG it's Firefly all over again!!
I can.t afford thousands of dollars in a computer and hundreds in controllers and displays
I'll just download ALL the oxp's I can and all the wiki pages and burn them to disk, at least I'll still have the best game EVER!!!
Well it is a bit quitter around here lately but I don't think Oolite will die completely. A lot depends on how Elite Dangerous plays out. In other words: Is it a fun game?
Oolite is a fun game already so that keeps me playing. I backed Elite Dangerous on a basic level (and on Mac here) so it is going to take a long time still before I can play it. It doesn't matter. Watching the Video's online Elite Dangerous seems nice but I do not feel I'm really missing out. In my opinion you have to bring a lot of money to the table to be able to play in Beta in a few systems. Of course that is going to change to a near infinite game world but I better wait until the full game to see if it is a replacement of every space game there is.
Even then Oolite is not going away as it is more a pure emulation of the original Elite with User customizing added.
I think the "feels like Elite" genre is wide enough to have room for several successful games in it.
We can do things that Elite Dangerous can't or won't and vice versa - for a topical example (in both games...) can you imagine what their forums would be like right now if they were to say "As a design decision, there's only one entry point into each system, to make it easier to set up blockades" - and as a result I think we're not even really competing with them for players.

Amen to that! E:D (also known as "I have a fringe, and I'm delighted" ) looks beautiful, and the scale and scope foe exploration look really exciting - but there are a lot of compromises, too, to accommodate the needs of a multiplayer game, which will affect things even if you choose not to take part in any PvP stuff. However you choose to play E:D, you're going to be in someone else's game: Oolite gives you your own universe, to customise how you want.

Even apart from all the other good reasons listed above, this is what will keep Oolite going. Not only is Oolite aimed at less powerful computers, it's pretty clear from the various enquiries we see, that there are lots of people (myself and many OoliteBB regulars included) playing Oolite on older hardware.
Now, would they be doing that if they could afford better computers? Of course not. So the chances of them being able to upgrade to the kind of machine that will be required to run E: D seems pretty slim to me.
Oolite will be around a long time yet.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied
A lot of the video's I see of the alpha Ver. seem to be made by people who never apparently played Elite or Oolite ,("What's this Mass-Lock Stuff?") maybe someone should point them here and say "Hay Guys, here's a E.D. trainer!"
