Arthur: OK. Leave this to me. I'm British. I know how to queue.

The anarchy part of the discussion has been moved to its own thread. I think it's important that this topic remains focused on Oolite itself.

Thanks.. I was feeling kinda guilty about that thread-jack..
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

It would be interesting to know if there was a historical tipping point - a stage at which Oolite stopped being a personal project and started to become a community, and if/how that affected you. Did you ever think it would go this far? Do you have ambitions/hopes for where Oolite might go?aegidian wrote:So, I've been asked to talk about Oolite for a bit at Lavecon in July.
I'd like to say something about how it's continuing to develop, but realise that I've been rather out of the loop. So, what should I say about version 1.80 and what would you like to hear me say about versions 0.0 to 1.6?
Or would you rather I just stopped mid-talk and break into a few of the numbers from Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'Be?

now that is an interesting question, well series of questions but would be interested to know.

And indeed how oolite has actually become what it is today, compared to what you originally envisioned for it to become. Both in terms of how the development team have taken it since you stepped back and Jens, Cim and all the other fine contributors gave their inputs. And also indeed how the OXP modifications have taken it to different and deeper places than just what the trunk offered.
Is there anything you would do differently if you knew back then where the game and the community would be today? And indeed where the wider game selection including E:D have placed Oolite and what it can offer.

Re: So, what should I say about Oolite at Lavecon
I think good questions would be :
What was your background with Elite itself?
Why did you start writing Oolite in the first place?
Did you reverse engineer anything/how much?
Why Elite and not FE2/FFE?
When did it become a 'thing'?
What surprised you about how the community appeared around the game?
What did you think about the side projects OXPs/Fiction/Maps/Website etc?
Where you worried about how it might be perceived by DB/IB/Frontier Developments?
Any particular highlights you'd particularly point out over the years?
On a side note. It's about ten years old isn't it? 10 year anniversary party?
Cheers,
Drew.

A 'submit your questions to the Lavecon Oolite panel' thread has been started on the E: D forum. <grins>

How did the event go? Did anyone record it?
