OXP hosting

Post by Noctua »

Hey guys,

I've been playing Oolite on and off for about three years now and I've greatly enjoyed a lot of the OXPs this community has created.

I didn't get around to register on this forum until now because my job and my studies have been quite time-consuming in the past couple of years and I didn't see the need to join the community unless I could contribute to the game myself. However, I've now finished my studies and would like to get involved a bit more, aside from playing the game. :)

I already have a few ideas for OXPs I'd like to work on in the future (one of them being some kind of military expansion, Wing Commander style), but I'll first have to read up on Oolite development of course. I'm a web developer, so I like to think of myself as someone who is at least somewhat competent at coding, but far from what you'd call a "good programmer" or even an expert.

First of all though, I'd like to make an offer. I've read in another thread that the changes in the OXP system in 1.79 will require a different file host (from what I understand, most of you have used box.com until now).

I have 100 GB worth of webspace of which I really only use about 10 at any given time. So I could set up a new domain (I have several unused ones bundled with my web hosting package) like oxphosting.com (or something along the lines) and create separate sub domains (username.oxphosting.com) for everyone who is interested in hosting his OXPs on my webspace.

Since it's a normal webspace, you could of course also set up a little website there to showcase your OXP list (insted of just having a list of files to download).

Let me know what you think it. :D

G'day, Noctua, and welcome aboard! 8)

Your OXP ideas sound interesting. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

If you read through the Hosting site for oxz files thread, you'll see that a rather neat solution has already been found, involving the Wiki.

Someone may take you up on your kind offer, but don't be too surprised if there are no takers.. Heh.. I still have an oxpcentral.net domain sitting around going unused.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Thank you for the warm welcome. :D

I've been playing Wing Commander 1 & 2 again lately and I think that these kind of missions (escort, scouting, kill missions etc.) could easily be procedurally generated in Oolite (this has been done before with various OXPs). Couple these with military ranks (which would then provide you access to certain military ships/equip depending on your rank), wingmen you can give commands (this might be a bit more difficult) and maybe some sort of random events (e.g., large scale Thargoid invasions). This certainly is a lot of work, but I'd like to see what I can achieve with some dedication.

Regarding the hosting: The hosting solution involving the Wiki sounds like the perfect option. :) My offer still stands though – as I said, not just for OXP/OXZ hosting, but for anything Oolite-related you might need a webspace for. I'm thinking about starting a fansite for Oolite myself. Most likely in form of a blog where I'll write about Oolite development, expansions I enjoy and maybe excerpts from my spaceship adventures. Oh well, we'll see...

Hi Noctua, and welcome :)
That is a very kind offer and there may well be some here who will be very grateful.
Also your OXP idea sounds interesting - good luck with that. You know where to come if you need any help.
