- Added Eric/DH flashers in between the segments.
- Added 8 "gateway" stations. At the moment these are just standard Coriolis stations, without rotation
- Moved the ring up to 2.5km orbit from 1.0km.

Re: crazy idea: artificial planet ring
I do love it when occasionally I have a relatively simple (so I thought) idea - that is so quickly and brilliantly assembled and implemented - spawning the idea for a mission into the bargain...

I like D's idea for the back-story a lot.Disembodied wrote:You could always give the backstory a bodyswerve, as it were, and just claim that nobody knows who built it ... if you put it around a human colonial world, it might have just been there when they arrived, all empty and full of potential. Maybe there's an archaeological investigation still ongoing, and rumours of occasional disappearances. It also wouldn't need to be around a top-TL system, either.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

I've never seen a good explanation of DaddyHoggy! I am inexplicable!pagroove wrote:Now THAT is an elegant solution. Great and it looks good too! Very futuristic and the explanation of Daddyhoggy is a good one.

Re: crazy idea: artificial planet ring
The Coriolis Gateway is again just a place-holder and could be a lot better with a properly designed for purpose station ring segment.
Specifically the dock is 90 degrees from where it ideally should be (it would look better in-line rather than at right angles) but as I've added flashers either side of the station to keep the ring-binding illusion going I can't simply rotate the model.
Also it doesn't quite fit in the gap for it, it's a little too small (!). Again it could be overcome by adding more flashers, but that might look a bit odd and could spoil the illusion. So once the modelling team get the segments finished it might be worth looking at cooking up a new model and skin for the gateways into the thing too. Currently there are 8, but again it's entirely flexible in the code (change the this.gateCount in line 8, but note that the code doesn't do any checking of values so isn't hard to break if you get silly).

Re: crazy idea: artificial planet ring
Minor bug: the ring is EXTREMELY fun to energy bomb:
Also, I think I'd put the rings higher still. They're too close to the atmosphere for my taste.

Re: crazy idea: artificial planet ring
Why energy bomb, when you can Q-bomb and watch it race around the globe?
And it's not a bug - as I said when I posted it, the current OXP is just a demo of what can be done.

Re: crazy idea: artificial planet ring
Regarding the mission related to this. Didn't Drew say he would put this in Finis if it came to be (He did, I checked). I think a little collaboration between OXP developers and fiction writers (Drew in this Case) would be a good idea. If someone takes it upon himself to do the storyline for the mission, maybe that person and Drew could synchronise their efforts in some way.
Just a thought.

I tried that, it didn't work. It did less damage than an E-bomb, because the stations got in the way. Maybe if I decrease the distance between the blocks...Thargoid wrote:Why energy bomb, when you can Q-bomb and watch it race around the globe?

Cheers! They could look quite cool ... some might even have a docking port in the mouth, perhaps. Although what you might have inside is anyone's guess.SandJ wrote:[Sir, I dedicate my next bottle of ale to you.

*BUMP ALERT*
Has anyone thought about making this in a full on OXP?
I had thoughts about the location of the ring. I would place it in G5: Tetiri (tech 14)
The Tetiri Conclave is already an isolated group of stars in G5. The story behind the ring could be that on colonization of the planet the inhabitants found this ring placed around the planet. Probably a left over of a long lost generation of spacefaring people?
There is only one such a ring in the Ooniverse and it could be a Tourist attraction just as famous as Tianve in G1. We could make Hotel Stations (several) placed in the system. And a custom high tech texture on the planet to set the scene.
What do you think?

In the Tetiri Conclave, so close to Aquti? Quite likely, I'd say.pagroove wrote:Probably a left over of a long lost generation of spacefaring people?

Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

And while we're at it, feel free to use (and improve) the Habitat Stations ( https://app.box.com/s/p52h0w4wj3hxq5h3i4mi ) as part of the Hotel Station pool.
Hmm, I ave also another funky station WIP, which I had planned for an "Ascension" -style über high-tech planet. I'll make that WIP available too tonight, even if it might be a bit on the weird side...
