Server problems?

Post by CWolf »

Earlier today - well, yesterday technically - it was impossible to access this forum or anything on the aegidian server, was there an issue?

I had the same problem, so there prolly was an issue either on the server or somewhere along the line... :?

Same here. I was however, greeted by a server 'RedHat Apache Test' screen, so I guess the Oolite servers have been upgraded/maintained. :)

The server died at around 1700 yesterday and it's had to be rebuilt. My provider rocks though and everything is now back and fine.

FWIW I would recommend http://www.namehog.net

Went off again today around 4pm I see.

All back now - wonder why this keeps happening? Maybe Oolite is just too popular! How many hits do you tend to get on the Oolite page?

interesting because when I first tried to get in about a minute ago I couldn't, although all I had to do was refresh (but then again, I use tabbed browsing so it was a little bit from when I clicked on the site to when I discovered I didn't let me in, maybe 5 minutes).

I have webalizer stats for aegidian.org going back a year.

In Aug 2005, we got 5481 hits a day.

In Jun 2006 we got 19462 hits per day.

Generally speaking about half those hits are to oolite.aegidian.org the remainder are mostly hits to the forum. Jeweltoy and my old Quake stuff are also popular but on a completely different scale.

I think a hit in Webalyzer is pretty much a single request - therefore, hits is vastly (by orders of magnitude) higher than actual visitors. For wiki.alioth.net, Webalizer reports on the order of 4500 hits a day, but in terms of visits - that's about 145 a day.
