I tend to stick with an OS that I like for a fair while - I only switched from XP Pro to Win 7 Ultimate (which I like a lot) less than a year ago.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Another thing to watch out for: if you use Skydrive, 8.1. forces you to sign into Windows via the internet with a Microsoft account - and you have to use Skydrive from Metro, not desktop. Ughh. It gets worse and worse. I've switched back (away from Skydrive) to Dropbox.

I'm feeling happier all the time about having dumped Windows altogether.. :D

Problem is, you'll get confronted with it at work, family etc.

Yeah . . . I know that feeling . . . And half the time the answer to their problems is "stop surfing for pr0n and getting malware"

Don't. Just don't!
Anybody using U.S. based cloud servers these days must know that anything stored there is vulnerable - it's open-season for the spooks and snoopers of the NSA etc.

I've provided tech-support to family, friends and workmates for many years now.. but unless they're *close* family, it costs them.. even if it's just a meal or a six-pack of beer. And the price goes up according to the difficulty/hassle involved.

Odd, I don't know why they didn't show up... anyway, Norby found the source, right on the money :).

Love those error messages.

That being said, Windows 8 starts up in under 5 seconds. (For me anyway.) From the time I press power, I can calmly count to five and I can see my desktop. Huge improvement over Vista. The UI is pretty bad however, and I agree that Windows 9 may be something special. (if we don't have to 'subscribe' to it like Office.)

upgrade to 8.1 went w/o a hitch.

(That is to say, computer hung 3 times during reboot attempts, 4th time I succeeded to get it into boot option mode, and stuff just worked.)

Still hate it though, how it always pops up stupid stuff if you swerve too much to the boundaries of the trackpad Grrrr!

I'm sure one can turn off that behaviour, but why is it working like that by default? Maddening maddening maddening!
