[Solved] oxp wont load ubuntu

Post by Musmula »

Hello
They say that here I can find help for oxp issues, so here I am.
I have a great PC, it is running dual boot (with WinXp and Ubuntu 13.04) and I am playing oolite on ubuntu but when I add a oxp (say Numeric HUD) it wont load. So I copy the .oxp to "home/MYUSERNAME/GNUstep/Applications/Oolite/AddOns" and when I run the game... nothing, I make sure that "stricked play" is turned off, restart, ...nothing... everything is exactly the same as I left it, so I wounder why and how to repair that?

Hey Musmula.

I can think of a few solutions for you.

Make sure in your addons folder that the oxp has .oxp at the end.
You might have already done this though :/

so like numeric_hud.oxp and not something like numeric hud v 5 or numerichud.zip

Also you could try re-installing it.

Also make sure that you have the latest version of Oolite v 1.77.1

:D

Hope this helps.

Are you using a system-wide or home-folder install?
For my system-wide install AddOns is in Home/.oolite which is where the game install puts it. Open your home folder and right-click 'view' then click on 'show hidden files'. You should find the .oolite folder there, with AddOns, Logs and .oolite-run inside.

Hi Musmula and welcome in the forum!

If you installed system-wide then try the /usr/lib/GNUstep/Applications/oolite.app/AddOns or maybe the /opt/AddOns folder (I symlinked all of these to one place for sure), and hold down the Shift key when you start the game first time after an oxp changed.

A bit off-topic, but the shift start is only needed when the contents of an existing OXP are edited. This is not necessary when adding new OXPs or replacing existing OXPs with a new version of the same.

The instalation is home, I think. However in home/.Oolite there is only a "Logs" folder and a .oolite.run file

The name was NumericHUDv1.3.3.oxp, but I have changed it toNumericHUD and it kind of solved the problem but it still isnt ideal, I have some garbled text on it... quite a lot garbled text, I would send you a screenshot but PrntScr isnt working

btw thanks for the quick reply

The OXP must have the .oxp extension otherwise it will not be recognized, so if the file obtained after unzipping was NumericHUDv1.3.3.oxp then that is the file which should be used with that full name.
I've never used a home install, so the AddONs folder could be elsewhere other than Home/.oolite. Did you add the AddOns folder yourself, or was it placed in home/MYUSERNAME/GNUstep/Applications/Oolite when the game installed? The game install should autiomatically put it in the correct location, so it might be worth a search to see if you have another (correct?) one somewhere.

In-game, use the * key (shift+8) to take pics... and welcome aboard.

By the way you can grab a screenshot using * (shift-8), or the print screen keyboard button should work as well. If you want to display an image here, you will need to upload it somewhere and link to it in [img] tags which you will find above the text input field.

Must be in the right place then :) The next thing to try is a re-install of the OXP - things do occassionally break during download/unzipping. Re-download it, unzip it and add the file with the .oxp extension (unchanged and named as it is) into AddOns. Hopefully it will work.

In that case, the AddOns folder will be located at /home/<username>/GNUstep/Applications/Oolite/AddOns

Edit: oops.. Smivs already mentioned it.. (I missed that, first time around)

Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

I'm a bit puzzled here. My memory might fail me, but I think I needed to create AddOns folder to ~/.Oolite myself. I'm on Debian.

Did you install Oolite from the download link at oolite.org, or using Ubuntu's Package Manager? And what version of Oolite do you have? The current (and recommended) version is 1.77.1
