Have you ever heard of Jonathon Fletcher?
No? Me neither.
He invented the search engine, in 1993, five years before Google.
Read this very interesting article about him:

Saw that article a few days ago too. I've never heard of him either and I was using search engines in '94. Webcrawler I think it was (logo of a spider in a web) and then AltaVista.

Ditto, me neither - the first search engine I ever used was Magellan, which would've been '95 (I think).Tricky wrote:Saw that article a few days ago too. I've never heard of him either...
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Ah the memories, AltaVista in Netscape Navigator.
Re: Have you ever heard of Jonathon Fletcher?
interesting. hindsight must be tough.
offtopic: that tower at his uni (u of stirling) , looks very intriguing to me, but I can't find it straight away with a search. (Probably not really part of the uni itself?)

That's the Wallace Monument - it's near to Stirling University, but not part of it.Rxke wrote:offtopic: that tower at his uni (u of stirling) , looks very intriguing to me, but I can't find it straight away with a search. (Probably not really part of the uni itself?)

The so-called Braveheart statue was not too popular, I see - good!

Re: Have you ever heard of Jonathon Fletcher?
Not too popular is a bit of an understatement. I lived in Stirling for 5 years and I have yet to meet one person who has anything positive to say about it. It regularly gets vandalised, even behind its metal cage they had to encase it in so it looks like he is in jail. Which is ironic as the word 'Freedom' is carved into the thing on its base.Cody wrote:The so-called Braveheart statue was not too popular, I see - good!

Hi Leafy
Yeah that statue is a bit naff, isn't it? The only thing stopping it being the worst statue idea ever is the Michael Jackson statue at Craven Cottage
