Any fans of Cosplay on the forums?

Post by DaddyHoggy »

I know it's not to the taste of everybody, but as an ex-Cosplayer (not that we called it Cosplay when I used to do it 20 years ago) - I still follow many of the best on the convention circuit (they mainly seem to be in Oz and to a lesser extent the US).

Anyway, this Kickstarter is trying to bring the best of the world together in one place (London): http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/153 ... yers-unite

I'm sorry? Strait-laced DaddyHoggy was a Cosplayer? Something about that image seems wrong!

No, not to my taste at all - but why only images of foxy ladies? Marketing?
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Like I said, we didn't call it Cosplay then (and I wasn't very strait-laced at/post-Uni) but there are photos of me dressed as The Crow (my favourite), various Star Fleet officers (mainly Riker since I'd grown a beard), Men-in-Black (chasing down the real Dwight Shultz!), Judge Dredd and erm, ah, Frankenfurter from Rocky Horror Picture show...

And when I say there are photos - being a pre-digital age - they're real photos and they're definitely not on the web (and are not going to be!)

There seems to be a considerably larger percentage of female Cosplayers (on the web) since most convention goers are young males...

(One of my favourite Cosplayers is Justin Acharacter - he's got sub-1000 followers on Facebook despite being a technically brilliant Costume designer and maker (his current Batman, Venom and (new) Superman costumes are absolutely spot on), compare that to the equally talented (but female) Eve Beauregard who has 18.5K followers)

Most of the well known Cosplayers don't use their real names...

It looks like the KS is a busted flush - with 24 hours to go it's only just got over half it's funding.

It would seem that although over 100,000 people "like" the selection of Cosplayers who were going to be in this project (who have FB pages - accepting that there may be many duplicates of "Likers" - only 300 of us were happy to put our money where our Like was. It'll be the first KS I've backed that hasn't been funded...

Well, the price of the calendar was pretty high and anyone willing to pay that much must be a devoted fan. If they had been able to find an entry level price low enough for casual fans, it might have worked.

I agree - and told the project owner that via a PM - but he didn't add a digital version (pdf that could be printed at home if you wanted to) as I suggested.

(He did add the DVD + Calendar option which was also my suggestion (which seems to have raised 1/8th of all the funding so far pledged) - but I've seen little social media activity other than the SCG girls FB page and some of the girls themselves have mentioned it irregularly) - so I figured it was actually it was going to fail about two weeks ago... (there hasn't even been a last minute 3-day to go flurry that other projects I have backed normal go through...)

Just surfing the TV Guide on Sky TV, and in half an hour today there is programme, Cosplay - A Way To Escape on the Community Channel (Sky 539) at 11.30am UK.

Edit: Did a search, but it appears there is no repeat in the next week. Recording it to watch later.

Edit2: Think you can watch it online here: http://www.communitychannel.org/video/LM0BUrUKbk8/
