I could make it pick the sun colour randomly and separate to the background star colours...
That would be good. I've always found it odd that the stars change colour depending on the sun. Background stars ideally would be a mix of colours.

These new suns would be against everything the original Elite stood for!

I'm just getting your goat. I can't wait to see them in my ooniverse! They look wonderful! Keep up the good work, and don't panic!

I want this

Looks terrific. Cinematic even.
I'm now using Distant Suns and these color the suns as I like. I like to see such variation in Oolite with those new suns.

Wider corona
Nice work cim, my choice is the "wider" due to this is the closest in corona size for this NASA photo:

Flares would be great, and perhaps we also need CMEs which fry your instruments if you fly through one

I would expect a flare to fry not only your instruments when you're hit by one while sunskimming.

Occasional very destructive flares near the sun - and thus a hazard for sun skimming - would be a great feature. Moreover, the chance of such flares could be correlated with planet descriptions that mention 'solar activity'. Perhaps we could even have 'flare-riding', as mentioned somewhere in Douglas Adams's Hitchhiker books. (I think there's already an OXP that provides boy racers - they could be used for that. The programming would be quite difficult, though.)

Didn't I propose this a few years ago? At the time I suggested systems with "Deadly Solar Activity" could have a loss of functionality (Nav Console) and rapidly discharging shields at high speed, with Svengali's lovely shader effects to indicate damaged shields impact by high energy particles.

Of course the issues were (at the time):

Couldn't turn the Astro Nav console off.
PCs with no shaders wouldn't see the effects
The NPC AI would have to be reprogrammed to cope with not flying until they blew up on Injectors.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

The new corona graphics are great and should be rolled into the base code when they can be.

Added solar activity is a completely new feature request, and comes with a lot of work for someone to do (in scripting, coding and graphics.) While it'd be nice, perhaps a separate thread in Discussion might be a better place to discuss it.

I thought there was an unwritten rule that all thread topics were eventually decoyed?? Did something change in the 8 weeks I was away?

This wasn't to be taken seriously.

Don't forget: suns are still not even 3D objects in Oolite. They're flat textures. So I was joking.

Sorry for any misunderstandings caused.

All we need is to make the sun send some 'injector' plumes now and then. And of course some plasma loops.

Just joking a bit. I'm more than happy with the new sun graphics alone. :D
