Do you just go into Aft view and shoot like normal?
Go into Aft view and flip your brain around (or turn your joystick through 180°, whatever's easier).
Personally, I'd go for the cargo bay expansion and fuel injectors as the first two essential purchases. After that, maybe fuel scoops (everything you scoop is pure profit - and they can pretty much pay for themselves with one lucky catch of an escape pod). Then - oh rapture! - a beam laser and an ECM. Maybe, if we're being sensible, an ECM first, before getting stuck into combat proper.
After some more consideration I have to correct myself: the next thing after the Large Cargo Bay is Fuel Scoops, not combat stuff. The reason is the one given by Disembodied: again increasing my earnings, especially as long as I don't have enough cash to fill my large cargo bay upfront. This will allow me to purchase all the other essential equipment sooner.
I agree with what others have posted....I usually buy fuel scoops first, followed by beam laser or injectors (there's so much equipment that is REALLY essential but you can't do anything without scoops and injectors are very useful.
An ECM is almost as important, scanner targeting enhancement is almost essential.
I usually start off Trading Computers/Luxuries from Rich Ind to Poor Agr and Furs the other way.....once you have a few hundred creds to play with.
It's tough getting started but once you get the basic equipment, the money starts rolling in.

Yup, The view is like the front except the controls are backward! Start with the pulse laser in the back and work your way up to military as you can afford it and once you have mastered the rear then there is the sides that take a whole different point of view of combat. But I must say the side laser kills are always the most satisfying as they are harder to achieve.

I use the side laser mounts for mining lasers. Makes mining simple, cruise past a big 'roid, stopping by it, switch to the side view and blast. Use the front and rear mounts for combat lasers.

Cheers,

Maybe you could start a Kickstarter Campaign to found your £4500 pledge.
Thanks to Gimi, I got an eBook in my inbox tonight (31st May 2014 - Release of Elite Reclamation)!

Aft lasers I think I could do easy with since it just reverses the controls; but sideways... I have a little trouble using side views to line up a docking sequence because it's not just backwards. Go to roll and end up changing pitch XD

Every now and then when I dock I get the option to have a "Maintenance Overhaul."
I looked it up on the wiki, but I still don't know what exactly it's for. Can my ship randomly break in this game if I don't take care of it like my car IRL? Or is it like getting a car wash in the Need for Speed series: just a waste of money?

Damn. There goes my docking computer; Just got the credits to buy it and have some left to trade more, and the Maintenance Overhaul is 100 credits more.
I like that though, and would be interested in knowing what sorts of things can happen should you not service your ship.
