Prices

Post by Davemak »

Whats the highest price people have seen for gold, platinum and gem-stones?

Been lugging a load of these around and the price never seems to go up very high, but loathe to flog them and miss out on a killer profit. Should have stuck with computers and furs.

Thats what I'd seen - not much variation in them is there.

Yeah, there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of variation on precious metal prices, at least not at normal space stations. They can be bought relatively cheaply from rock hermits but even then the potential profit is only likely to be a few tens of credits per unit.

The best way to make money with these commodities is either in shipping them on the contract cargo market, or if you're a less honest pilot, acquiring them through acts of piracy. Pythons make particularly good targets as they seem to carry gold and other valuables quite frequently and what's more they aren't usually protected by an escort.

I once had about 50+ kg's of platinum, and found that the price wouldnt go above 70 per kg (This was after many visits to various tech-level planets).

I always assumed that Oolite was coded to do this.

Anyway, I flogged half of it, and the next place I went got 78 / kg for the rest of it.

Also, if you've got the Hoopy Casino installed, at Poor Industral planets I found I could get anything up to 80 / g for gem stones (That was on the original release though, I dont know if an update has changed it or not)

I often accumulate 400-500kg of each, mainly buying at rock hermits, where they are dirt cheap, and just forget about it until I see a really silly price. Unfortunately, the 127kg limit can make it hard work getting rid of it - hence why I end up with 400-500kg!!
On one occasion, I calculated that I had nearly 100k.cr of bits!

I normally buy them when they're cheap to help use up the spare cash that I have after buying 'standard' cargo - once you've got the 2-3k in credits to buy a full cargo hold of computers/furs/etc and you've got most ship equipment then you can have a lot of cash not being used. :)

I've been in a similar position to Star Gazer before but I just shuttled back and forth between systems when I found somewhere that would buy at the high prices. As far as I've seen the best prices turn up at Mainly Industrial planets but that could just be luck.

I also think that prices should fluctuate more but then they were always quite stable in Elite, as far as I can remember. :?

Not by birth - studying at UEA - which is why Oolite couldn't have been at a worse time!

May reinstall Hoopy's to see if that gives me some good prices. Think I have found just what you have all confirmed - poor investment return but something to fill up the cargo holds and use up the spare cash (until I get anywhere near buying a new ship which is taking foreeeeeever!)
Whats this 127 kg limit that was mentioned?

You only only sell a maximum of 127kg or 127g at a station at a visit.

@ Davemak - UEA, ehh...? Not just in the middle of exams, I hope... ...tut, tut... GO ON! BACK TO WORK!!
- just joking! I hope they all go well.

I was at UEA (1986-87) where I studied computer science for two years before dropping out (in theory I'm still a member of UEASU - I took out a life membership, but I don't know where my card went).

I stayed on in Norwich at various address around the Unthank until I met my (now) wife and moved down to the smoke at the end of '92.

I worked as a pancake chef at Bagley's Barn for a year too - is that still there SG?

Pictures from this time have me with shoulder length blond hair(!)

@ aegidian - my goodness, hadn't realised you were around Norwich then! - the bands I used to be with at that time played at the UEA and the Norwich Arts Centre - you may have had the misfortune to see one of them!! I know the unthank area well - my (ex)girlfriend lives in Newmarket Street, and I had other friends in Mount Pleasant, and Park Lane.
I ran away from the smoke in '82 to escape to Norfolk and sanity! I'm not sure about Bagley's - I'll have to check...

@ Davemak - yeah, guess so -  - I don't know how much longer I can keep this job together, though...
Right that's it, I'm way off-topic now!

The only local bands I had time for were Gee Mr Tracy and 33 Relief. I was a big Gee Mr Tracy fan - took time to see them perform twice.

Sorry to kinda get back on topic, but why is there a 127kg limit....it's really annoying.

And.....as for Bagley's Barn, my mate's been in Norwich all his life, so I'll ask him I next see him.
