<nods sypathetically> Intel plus nVidia... yes?
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

Yes, it does seem that way, my old PC had that combo and never had these issues.

The combo we use at work for C2 systems. (With a few exceptions)

 Last time I built a tower it was an AMD CPU with nVidia GPU. Admittedly XP had just been released, and the GPU card was PCI format. (At least it wasn't (E)ISA format)

I'm all out of ideas - but something about that BIOS update has me wondering. Was that an auto-update, Geraldine?
No, I did it because I had issues with other things on my system. These AMD Bulldozer CPUs can be problematic at times

As an Amiga owner, I thought I would never see the day I would say this  .........but from now on it's going to be Intel powering my next PC. Well when I can afford a new one that is

Hahaha - Diziet just knows the facts; can't blame him for liking Mint (or for "pushing" it for that matter), it's so crisp and snappy

Aaaaaaaargh!!!! <in a complete over reaction stylee> :x These trice damned ATI drivers are driving me nuts!
Just installed that latest ones and decided to give version 1.77 of Oolite a try aaaand..... :(

I checked on a number of forums and it seems ATI drivers have long standing "issues" with GL. There is too many to pin down, basically if something works then great. If not, tough. That seems to be the long and the short of it. Well, I am saving up for a new rig for ED. Its going to be i7/Nvidia based. In the meantime Oolite is off the menu sadly, but at least it has encouraged me to fire up one of my old Amigas again for a proper Elite fix 8)

Geraldine, try running the game with the -nosplash switch and see if that helps. If not, switching drivers (even to older version, if the newest is what you have) might be of help.

 O.M.G THAT FIXED IT!!!! For weeks I have been trying to get Oolite to work. At a stroke you, YOU fixed it. The -nosplash switch did the trick. Thank you so much another_commander. Your a star! :D

Uh oh, guess I better pack away all this Amiga stuff again, well maybe in a bit....

LOL - top of the head a little sparse, Cody ? :P :) (Just bustin' ya)

I'm glad you got things working Geraldine. I agree about waiting until you're flush out of ideas to post for help.

Edit to fix grammatical nonsense :D
