Re: Science Fiction Trivia
It's Stanislaw Lem, but not Star Diaries.
Re: Science Fiction Trivia
Ach, I remember reading this story a few months ago, but don't remember its name.
Oh well, I should pay the local library a visit anyway.

Tip: It's a short story inside a short story (inside a book)
Extra points to whose who say the name of the stories

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
Some stories of this book (but not this one) appears also in The Mind's I by Douglas Hofstadter and Daniel Dennett.
Re: Science Fiction Trivia
The universe described by the book, is populated by robots.
Re: Science Fiction Trivia
Whee, finally found time to visit our library.
I think I have these right, but the names may sound strange, because I'm translating story names from Finnish to English and these Finnish names are translations from English and German translations of the Polish original .
I think you're after The story of Prince Ferrens and Princess Kristalla from collection Mekamerone.
Here it gets a bit ambiguous, apparently the story was originally published in Cyberiada, but the book I saw it in was Stories and Fairy Tales of the Machine People (orig. Bajki robotów).
Oh yeah, Lem is one of the greates classic sci-fi writers, both on the wacky/humorous and on the other hand serious front.

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
The book is The Cyberiad
The short story is Mimosh the self-begotten, which is inside Tale of the three storyteling machines of King Genius.
The story of Prince Ferrens and Princess Kristalla is also from the Cyberiad, but it isn's contained in the Tale of the three storytelling machine.
Lem is one of my favourite writers.
You guessed the book and the author.
Your turn.

I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!
