Back after some years...advice and recoommendations

Post by beeze »

Hi Folks,

It's been a few years since I seriously played...but in linux, always saved my oolite backups ;)

Now I've installed Linux Mint and re-loaded old saved game. Is there any recommended missions (I've done constrictor + Iconics - from memory). I've attached snaphot here (status). I've just added Passenger Berth, so I'd like to do some med/hard missions with passengers. Is it worth getting 1.77+ version? The one I got from "apt-get" repository gave me 1.75.x (!)

Any links to refresh my memory on "Equipment" and what it does? (Sorry).

Many thanks to this community for continuing to support and develop such a fantasic game!

Beeze.

Hi beeze, and welcome back :)
How's my old hometown? Exiled in Nottingham these days but still think of Worthing as 'Home'.
Definitely worth upgrading to 1.77...loads of new features and many OXPs are 1.77 only now as well. As for missions, well you are spoilt for choice. Take a look at the wiki OXP table which is sortable, or go straight to the Missions overview page.
Enjoy :)

Get [EliteWiki] Randomshipnames - great immersion OXP - and welcome back!
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Thanks for the advice :) I should have spelt "recommendations" better too - speed typing...sorry

I'll upgrade. BTW: I am exiled from Worthing too....currently working on contract in Melbourne/Australia. My flat in Worthing is rented out.

One more thing. I need a goal beside the "Elite" rating in this game. I like the look of upgrading to a "top notch" ship. Possibly a ship that can carrry hundreds of tons of cargo, but still has the ability (speed, agility, 4 laser mounts etc) of the Cobra MkIII (my current ship).

Is there such a ship? What does this community consider the best one and how much? Is it part of the stock game or do I have to add an OXP for it?

Cheers,
Beeze

Ha, Melbourne sounds a bit nicer than Nottingham - cold, grey and wet a speciality! :(
The best (biggest) of the core ships is the Boa Class Cruiser (175TC hold), and a fine ship it is too. Well, there's always the Anaconda, but it is a slow plodder albeit with 750TC cargo capacity.
OXP ships come in all shapes and sizes of course, so it is a case of looking if you want to go down that road. Some are a bit silly and some are just too good to be true so choose wisely if you want to preserve game balance.
As for goals to achieve, well there are plenty of missions as you will have seen by now and some of these have various 'rewards' from cash payments to special bits of equipment to nonesense like gaining kudos for visiting all the Giant Space Pizzas :P

Many thanks. I'll check out the Boa ;)

You are right, if I go down the OXP road for ships, I could get one that unbalances the game. I prefer to stay with the core game - unless otherwise. Yep, it was 31C here today...same again tomorrow ;)

I like to the missions...but I wanted a "Elite"-like goal to get. Its hard to explain it. It's a bit off-topic, but in GTA Vice City, I loved having the cash to buy the mansions, swanky apartments etc etc.. That sort of thing.

Anyway, I''ll first d/l 1.77 version. Then look at the recommended OXP's with a few missions too.

Cheers,
Beeze...

Heh.. I thought you'd spelled it that way on purpose.. getting into the Ooniverse spirit..

Hey! I'm in Melbourne these days too! How did you like the 38-39 degree days we had a little while ago?

Hehe. Us "Poms" will never get used to it. I think it touched 41C ...which is just insane. I work in the CBD (central business district) and the heat radiating off the building made it worse

As Mr. Clarkson says, "Could have been worse..." meaning bush fires in Gippsland or how about getting flooded in Queenland and NSW..again! Jeez.

Code: Select all

patb@lappywuss ~/.Oolite/AddOns $ ls
BigShips 1.02.oxp liners_v1.5.oxp thargoid_wars 4.5.4.oxp
Galactic_Navy 5.4.3.oxp randomshipnames1.2.oxp
keyconfig.plist Stealth 1.04.oxp
Above is what I have for OXP. I'm in G3 so I will give the, "Stealth", mission a try ;)

Any reason why the ENERGY BOMB has been removed? The README for, "Thargoid Wars", seems to indicate I need one. Do I?

Cheers

If you're in G3 try Aquatics and TCAT too, and go visit Aqualina.

You don't need the bomb for the mission. It was just a way to say it is tough. I'll change that text into:
The third is a fairly deadly encounter that you may want to have a military energy unit for.
None of the encounters is extremely difficult. I just wonder what Wombat mend with:
The fourth encounter involves increased efforts on the part of the Thargoids to collect intelligence.
There is only a satellite added without any consequences. Had Wombat the intention to add a fourth thargoid encounter to it? It is never implemented in the code.

I'll see what I can do to make live a bit harder when you don't destroy the satellite in time. :)

Thanks guys ;)

I'm on the Stealth mission - the Galactic chart seems to indicate where I should go...so I'm en-route now! Will look at the other (G3) missions afterwards. I did find a Naval command centre on the way...

...manually docked and got offered some "Victory Bonds" (1000Cr per bond...mmmmm) and some missions for the navy. Since I'm on a current mission I didn't accept, but will go back later to check it out.

Yeah.. I was born in "Pomgolia" but been here over 45 years, and still can't get used to it.. mind you, I'd rather be in Alice Springs in 50C, than Melbourne in 32C. I thought the 41C might have been just local to where I was, which is why I downgraded it in my comment above. Bushfires and floods suck worse though, for sure.. had my share of those, too.. most recently the floods in Brisbane a couple of years back.
