Re: David Braben's Elite: Dangerous
My commander and NPC names seem to have been approved. I'll be known as Marcan Wolfwood (sort of sci-fi translation of my real name Marko Susimetsa) and the NPC to look out for is Ulla Varpu (first names of my wife and daughter).

I'll be flying around as Gimbal Locke.
If you ever meet an NPC named Koen Lefever, shoot him without mercy since he has stolen my real name.

Re: David Braben's Elite: Dangerous
A thread concerning post-release funding (MP server costs etc) has caught my eye.
There is speculation that some form of subscription may be involved - is that likely?

I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

As I recall they were pretty clear in the Kickstarter that it wouldn't be subscription-based, though exchanging money for credits would be used as a funding method. (As would "selling the game and expansions", of course)El Viejo wrote:A thread concerning post-release funding (MP server costs etc) has caught my eye.

EDIT: Ah, there it is:
Kickstarter FAQ list wrote:Will the game be free to play after the initial purchase?
We do not plan to make it subscription-based. Once you have purchased the game up front, you will be able to play thereafter for no further cost. Everything in the game will be purchasable with in-game Credits, earned from trading, bounty-hunting, etc. We will probably allow the supplemental purchase of Credits with real money, for those who want to accelerate their progress through the game.
We do plan to charge for additional updates, to be available sometime after the original release. These will offer additional content, features and gameplay.

Re: David Braben's Elite: Dangerous
Thanks, cim... there's too much to wade through if you haven't been following the KS/forum (reams of fluff there) from the start. I suppose real money for in-game credits is a necessary evil these days... but the whole idea is abhorrent to me personally. One more nail in the MP coffin, methinks!Kickstarter FAQ list wrote:Will the game be free to play after the initial purchase?

I'm in, as me.
Hey, it strikes me that we could hijack a planet/station, & have it as the Oolite base
have some sort of funny handshake, etc
maybe even a ... funny walk!
then we could have endless committee meetings about how to behave... or not.
hmmm, actually, that might be a stoopid idea.

Wasn't Commander Cody an old Film serial or perhaps a Radio Play ? I can't seem to find the reference, maybe it was something that sounded like Cody.............El Viejo wrote:If it's approved, I'll be Commander Cody (which has been my in-game moniker for many years).

Re: David Braben's Elite: Dangerous
There are several Codys - Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen (a favourite band of mine), Buffalo Bill Cody (famous wild-west showman) - and the one I took the name from: Samuel Franklin Cody (he too was a showman, but also a notable pioneer of manned kites and early aviation). A remarkable man, in many respects.Styggron wrote:Wasn't Commander Cody an old Film serial or perhaps a Radio Play ? Re: David Braben's Elite: Dangerous
Being a bit slow lately, I've only just discovered that the Frontier forum has a Rep system - people can rate a post and pass comment.
<howls with laughter at the absurdity of the system>
I'm off to a good start, it would seem (although I do have a Rep of 11, due to other more favourable comments).A really poor comment with no soul.
