Which would make it About Time it made a reappearance, no?
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

I think this already looks awesome!!mandoman wrote:Here's an update on the Comet. No where near finished, as you can see, but it's getting there. Oh, and it ain't perfect. Every time I think I've got the size, and angle of a section figured out, I notice that it doesn't look quite right going by another picture of the ship. I have a strong suspicion that not all of those pictures I downloaded are proportionally, or exactly the same by any means. Here's a pic.
Maybe the rear orb should be just a little bigger, but as I said: awesome!! I really like it already!!!
I also think yours will be better mandoman. I'd like to have the one from the cartoon!mandoman wrote:Why does the 3D Model of it differ from the cartoon drawings so much? There are whole sections, and small parts on that model that are either shaped differently, or show something completely different from the model, to the cartoon.
After what I've seen so far, I'm confident that your version will be the ultimate one!!mandoman wrote:As for the challenge, I think I was already doing it, but no one told me before now that a 3D Model of the Comet was already in existence. If that model can be downloaded, and used in the game, I see no use in my continuing, other than to satisfy my own creative appetite. That is probably what I will do, though it's still a bit confusing to me as to which images to rely upon as the "actual" Comet. I guess it's moot at this point, though.
What he said!!Diziet Sma wrote:Team up with one of our Master Texturers, and I'm sure it will be magnificent!
Again, thank you mandoman, for doing that! It's soooooo cool!!!
And I have to say I can't believe how fast you guys (modelers) are... incredible! I for my part have absolutely no talent in such things, I guess it would take me a year and wouldn't look half as good! (no kidding!)
Btw, now that I preview my post and have a look at the comet again, I suddenly like that the rear orb is relatively small.. mandoman, forget what I said, do what you feel, you are an artist

It took me hours of messing about to get the scoop and ejection positions right, so you could scoop things straight in the open door, and eject them the same way without immediately re-scooping your jetsam.Diziet Sma wrote:Which would make it About Time it made a reappearance, no?
I can't recall whether I ever did get the weapon position right, so the beam would appear from the blue light on top.
Perhaps it will re-appear for the seventh anniversary.

Although I may have picked a texturing nightmare.

The detail on that thing in the cartoon was immense.

Since these are from a video game, I'd not be surprised if 3D-Models already exist...

Okay, here is another update on my progress on the Comet. It still has a long way to go.

I just didn't want to upset you (again) by having you find out that models still exist after you've already almost completed your work!mandoman wrote:Yeah, but where's the fun in that?GGShinobi wrote:Two more ships: The Normandy SR1 + Normandy SR2 from Mass Effect:

Wow, mandoman, that's great! Great! Must have it!mandoman wrote:Okay, here is another update on my progress on the Comet. It still has a long way to go.
Can't wait till it's done!!!
EDIT1: mandoman was faster! => *strike through*
EDIT2: in my eyes it looks almost finished... gimme the keys!!!

Glad you like it.
Maybe you can tell me, do those wing panels sticking out from the sides of the front globe have to be in a certain position, or do they spin, or what? I see they are shown in different positions.

Re: Ship Wishlist!!! :-D
You are right - the comet has several flexible parts. The side "antenna-dishes" can fold and turn, the wing panels can rotate and change their angle... and even the "fin-like" things on top and bottom can be retracted a little bit, e.g. when landing.mandoman wrote:Glad you like it.

I want all parts movable, too!
And of course I guess I can at least expect that the comet becomes a real comet like in the cartoon, when moving at jump drive speed?
Now serious, this is soo cool!! Thanks!!

Re: Ship Wishlist!!! :-D
You know, it could be made to do some of that, but it would take someone that knows how to write Java Script. I can't do that at all, maybe you can? Anyway, if you want to try to get different sections to rotate at a given time, it will first be necessary to split those sections into subentities for the oxp. I can do that, but I have no idea how to make it work in game. Oh, I could make all those sections spin, but they would just be spinning continuously. I don't think that would look too good, personally, but it's up to you. Maybe you could ask one of the fine scripters on the Forum to help you. Let me know if you want those sections to spin, or I'll probably just finish it as a single unit.GGShinobi wrote:You are right - the comet has several flexible parts. Oh, wow... actually I was just kidding, but now that you say that it is possible...mandoman wrote:You know, it could be made to do some of that, but it would take someone that knows how to write Java Script. I'm still learning Java Script (trough OXPs), but I think I could help with that. And of course, if someone else has experience and would like to help, I'm completely fine with that! *looking around*
My thoughts so far:
- When approaching a station aegis, make "wings" fold and "fins" retract a little, so it becomes easier to dock, also fold "radar-ears"
- Perhaps also do something when approaching a planet or a sun (e.g. fold "radar-ears")
- Depending on how it looks: Make "wings" rotate (fast) when using jump (torus) drive
- Depending on how it looks: Make "wings" rotate (slowly first, getting faster) when initiating hyperspace-jump
Now another crazy idea: would it be possible to switch between "vertical" and "horizontal" flight mode? As you know, the comet has the ability to start vertically, due to it's thrusters that are pointing downwards. And it can fly (much faster) forward by using the normal thrusters (those in the wings and the main thruster located at rear). Would that be possible, too??? (just asking - I won't be dissappointed if not )
EDIT: Oh, I forgot: the comet is not only capable of launching vertically, but it can move in virtually any arbitrary direction with all those thrusters that are built into it! (it often uses this for dodging in fights)
