When it comes to OXP's I have learned the hard way, so I always read the "read me" the first time I install an OXP. I might be a bit more relaxed for updates though, but in general I keep track. I did try to make an overview of issues, versions and dependencies for all my installed OXP's once. I quickly gave up.
Edit: Also, more than once, reading the instructions/"read me" has resulted in the OXP not being installed for various reasons.
