V1.77 - Missing star/nebula textures
Hi folks, firstly thanks for the huge pile of work, recently came back to Oolite after the Braben kickstarter news reminded me of it! V1.77's looking great :)
I seem to have a problem with missing stars/nebulae on my Windows Vista 64-bit laptop (ATI Mobility 2400 graphics).
On a clean v1.77 install (no add-ons) either deployment build or converted to test build I get no stars/nebulae visible. This shows in my own savegames and as a new Jameson leaving Lave.
Planets/ships/dust are all visible, but nothing in the background. I *think* I can see the objects the textures map onto, randomly distributed dull grey squares/cubes are visible throughout the sky - they don't move with my viewpoint, staying static and unreachable/distant.
I can't get a logfile at the moment as it's on my home PC (can't check till evening), but there didn't look to be any major errors/problems in it.
[EDITED - corrected gfx card type, sorry another_commander!

Re: V1.77 - Missing star/nebula textures
Hi Arch. I have exactly the same problem on my Asus laptop with ATI graphics. It's a graphics driver issue. You might find it worth trying newer Intel drivers. There's a tutorial here that describes how to modify standard drivers so they'll install to a laptop. Hope this helps.

Re: V1.77 - Missing star/nebula textures
But before you start modifying your driver, check the Wiki page -> [wiki]Hidden_Settings_in_Oolite[/wiki].

Re: V1.77 - Missing star/nebula textures
Many thanks Diz, I'll give that a go when I'm home.
Svengali, is there a particular GNU default I should look at? Bit lost looking through all the params.
Although now I look, I do recall seeing a message in the log saying something like it couldn't find gnu step defaults?
EDIT - ahh, followed Diz's link, will try -nosplash first and report back, cheers!

Re: V1.77 - Missing star/nebula textures
No joy with -nosplash, but turning off texture level-of-detail in the .gnustepdefaults has brought back the starts/nebulae!
It's noticeably jumpy though so will have a go with updating the drivers - now I think about it I'm on a recently re-installed Vista here after adding an SSD so probably on old drivers.
Thanks all!

Re: V1.77 - Missing star/nebula textures
New drivers installed but I think the default settings are a little beyond my poor ol' Radeon 2400!
Currently hacking off detail levels until it runs smoothly again - think I've turned a texture setting down beyond the point where it renders the nebulae, but at least I have a star field!
Thanks folks :)

Re: V1.77 - Missing star/nebula textures
I'll have to look into that.. using the latest available drivers for my ATI laptop, the stars and nebulae are square blobs. (Although at one point it was working correctly) That's one of the reasons I now mostly use a Linux desktop PC for Oolite.

Re: V1.77 - Missing star/nebula textures
I'm glad you suggested that Diziet . I was thinking the same thing when I noticed Arch Stanton using Vista with what I assume is an older machine.Diziet Sma wrote:That's one of the reasons I now mostly use a Linux desktop PC for Oolite.
Arch Stanton: you should consider this - Linux is very good with older machines and hardware. I have two approximately ten-year-old computers that run Linux Mint 13 fantastically (13 is the most recent long-term-support release of the distribution). The old desktop is actually usable again - unlike its condition before with Win xp, which was so slow and cumbersome that is was essentially useless (and that was clean, without any viruses!). Honestly, if I had known how well the computer was going to work in Linux, I would have probably used it for another year before getting a new computer, which I did last Feb (of course, it too is running Linux Mint ).

Yup.. this 10 year-old desktop unit with Linux Mint runs Oolite better than my 3yo Asus laptop running Vista does..

Re: V1.77 - Missing star/nebula textures
Ahhh, sadly stuck with a windows machine - I'm a heavy Lightroom user and both my other half and I need a Win machine to remote log into work.
Could dual boot I guess, but the SSD's not huge.
Having said that I have an I5 desktop I do bulk photo work on plugged into a big screen, I can move Oolite over there. The laptop gets more use as we're creatures of the sofa really!

Re: V1.77 - Missing star/nebula textures
Is getting a new HD for the laptop feasible? You could more easily dual boot then.Arch Stanton wrote:Ahhh, sadly stuck with a windows machine - I'm a heavy Lightroom user and both my other half and I need a Win machine to remote log into work.

<chuckles> I bet the big screen would be great for the game though .Arch Stanton wrote:Having said that I have an I5 desktop I do bulk photo work on plugged into a big screen, I can move Oolite over there. The laptop gets more use as we're creatures of the sofa really!

Re: V1.77 - Missing star/nebula textures
Recommending a switch in operating system when someone reports an issue with the game is a lexicographical definition of "bad advice" as far as I am concerned. This is clearly a graphics driver issue we are dealing with here and bad or wrong drivers will hurt the game under Linux, too.
Arch Stanton, it would be helpful if you could post a Latest.log following a restart of the game with Shift held down.

Re: V1.77 - Missing star/nebula textures
Hi another_commander, here's my latest log from the test build - can't see anything obvious in it but still no nebulae. A few JS errors towards the end but they don't look likely to cause texture problems.
Ahem, feel free to ignore the Snakes Onna Plane OXP - it's just my own shipdata.plist for cobra3-player.

Re: V1.77 - Missing star/nebula textures
It's setting "use-texture-lod-bias" = NO; in my .GNUStepDefaults that turns off the nebulae.
If I set it back to YES (as below) I get stars and nebulae but then playing is a bit like the old a-bear-walks-into-a-bar joke, the bartender says,
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
"Why the big paws?"
Ba-dum-tish!
Anyway, back to the point - with LOD on I get 1-3 second pauses onscreen every few seconds, I'm guessing when big textures enter the screen.
Any ideas what combination of Shaders/Detail and the GNU defaults is likely to work best?

Re: V1.77 - Missing star/nebula textures
Arch Stanton: Are you using the 12.6 ATI Mobility drivers? Sometimes it may be helpful to fall back to a previous driver version if the new ones are not cutting it. What is the memory on the video card? The description of the problem seems to indicate that there is not enough and that RAM swapping might be taking place.
I have also noticed that in your first post you mention Intel graphics, but further down it is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400. I think this needs to be clarified a bit.
Try running the game without shaders to begin with. Switch to simple if it works and test again. I recommend exiting and restarting every time you change shader settings just to be on the safe side.
