New To Board: Commander Mic
Hi Guys,
I just thought I would introduce myself...
Some of you older players may remember old "Commander Mic" of the now ancient (but still active) Pilot's Lounge. Hey, I still enjoy playing Frontier Elite II and Elite Plus under DosBox and even more on vintage DOS platforms - but was recently totally blown away when trying out the latest version of Oolite with a selection of Add-Ons (BSG) loaded in. OMG! Wonderful...
Well, here's just a friendly little shout out, kind regards, and note of thanks to all commanders for a happy & healthy holiday season.

Welcome aboard, CmdrMic - did you also attempt to join as CommanderMic? If so, may I delete that unactivated account?

Yes, please kindly delete that 2nd account request. I did not initially receive any email verification from the board on the first try... (CmdrMic) so I tried again the next day with another like username. Also got nothing from the second try... but today, happily - got a follow-up email directly from Jens. That worked.
Thanks very much for the assistance.

BTW, if you know "Moblis in Mobili", then you must also be among the few who understand "Nautron Respoc Lorni Virch!" (The English Translation by F.P. Walters is fantastic - my favorite book!)

Aye, I first read that masterpiece when I was nine or ten (a long time ago, now).

Hi CmdrMic, and welcome. Sorry about the trouble you had signing up - it's nothing personal and you certainly weren't the only one. Glad you made it

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the replies.
Geraldine - Elite Plus: Planetside was just an FST (Flight Sim Toolkit) based sim - with a cockpit robbed out of Elite Plus . You fly around in Elite type ships... There's a little sub-section on it (done ages ago) which you can still visit here. I do have an update to my FST Data Port section that includes the latest build out of EP2. I try to get the newest version uploaded soon...
Thanks for the interest!

El Viejo,
Finally, F.P. Walters went back to the original and did it right!
You can get the full translation by F.P. Walters free here. I read it several years ago now, and was truly shocked by the beauty of Verne's >>true<< writing abilities. I have bought a hard copy and reread it again since. Compare any older English copy of the book you have to what is in the Walter's translation, and you will see and be amazed - even the chapter names are far different. All English copies other than F.P. Walters are truly disgraceful to the true value of the original work.
Have a look... I know you'll enjoy and agree!

Hmm, I am not sure of your age, however if you did not read the original French version or F.P. Walter's translation, there is an excellent chance - you didn't really read the "actual" book. You see the original English translation was terribly botched... done about ten years after the book's release. It was done by this Vicker who did and absolutely horrible job of it. He changed wording and phrases, removed and retitled entire chapters! The bloke even removed items he thought were immoral... His mistakes were never addressed and for more than one hundred years... publishers never bothered to check what was in the original French publication of the true book! Even the title of the book was incorrect. It's true translation from French is: 20,000 Leagues under the Seas (which makes perfect sense - ... under the "Sea" does not as league is a term for distance, not depth...)El Viejo wrote:Aye, I first read that masterpiece when I was nine or ten (a long time ago, now).

Re: New To Board: Commander Mic
It was the early '60s when I first read it, and I only became aware of the translation problems many years later. I have read Walter's translation here though.
