Multiplayer

Effective large ships - they appear to have some turret weapon options with a decent range. Oolite's Anaconda is basically just a somewhat unwieldy fighter.

Decent ring systems. That's theoretically just a matter of upping the efficiency and getting rid of the bottlenecks in entity handling, but there's a long way to go before Oolite can handle that properly, even for our tiny planets.

Proper exploration missions or sandbox. The eight charts lack any sort of frontier region, and it's really beyond OXP capabilities to add one.

I expect "proper planet surface interaction as in FE2/FFE" can be added to that list, even if they haven't explicitly shown it yet.

Tthanks for the heads up. Still it looks a bit like the Chopped Cobra.
Agreed

But what do you think of the combat. I miss the (beam)lasers
On the other hand this could be the pulse laser. I remember watching some vids of the original Elite and seeing that the pulse lasers fired pulses and not a beam.
From what I understand, things like that will be decided upon within the Decision Design Forum. I'm assuming that there will be a variety of weaponary, from kinetic to laser.

DB did mention on the video that the Anacondas were equipped with turrets.

Good to see a ringed planet and that they didn't go over-board with nebula. I still want to see a docking sequence in one of the videos. :D

I want a video on planet generation and planetary landing. That will probably make me to do a small pledge.

But technically one could also make an Anaconda with a turret on it? (as an OXP?). Of course I understand that this ED-engine is of course more advanced. That's also what I expect from this project. But I meant it more gameplay wise. I mean this fight doesn't for some reason excite me as much as some battles in Oolite do. I can't point my finger on it. But of course this is not the definitive version so all sorts of things can change.

Today I've read through all comments with the cmd-F function to search for comments on Oolite. Most people seem to be quite impressed by Oolite.

A short range plasma turret, yes, to discourage dog-fighters and make the Anaconda's slowish turn rate less of an issue, but that's not the same thing. For a turret-focused ship (which anything with no ability to dogfight really has to be) you need turrets with at least equal range to the ships shooting at you, or you might as well be unarmed. (e.g. the GalNavy OXP Frigates, which are lethal if they get close, and utterly useless beyond about 8km)

That's not technology Galcop has (or the Thargoid's laser wouldn't be the distinctive weapon it is)

I notice there doesn't seem to be a problem with laser temperature. I also couldn't make out what they were using as a controller. Also it looks like the missiles are 'fire and forget', and can be got at it you're not the target.

I think they're the 'Xbox 360 controllers for PC' that microsoft make.
That was an exciting bit of combat in that video and a fab new bit of concept art in the same update announcement on the kickstarter page, hope they can get a lot of that lovely reflected lighting from the nearest planet into the game those orange glows in the artwork look awesome!

DB's comments about procedurally generated clouds strongly suggest that. I think the video looks amazing, personally, even though it's obviously still early days. But I can imagine coming through a fight like this, and then making it to the planet, then flying down through blue skies and puffy white procedurally generated clouds to a planet-sized planet, slipping through the atmosphere to the starport ...

Mind you, I had the same dreams about Frontier before it came out, and was sorely disappointed. But still: I am prepared to hope for the best!

SOOO HAPPY! This latest video gives me hope that DB is taking pledger's criticism's and starting to put out more updates. Also.

Anyone else notice that Viper taking damage at the end of the video? It gets me excited! I use Smiv's shipset for that feature alone, ship damage really immerses me in the dogfight.

Sometimes I run it.

ps. It's good in a realistic physics and eye candy sort of a way. Ship combat has the same basic flaw as Frontier... and the galaxy currently has hardly anywhere populated so there aren't many places to go.
