A player's personal RoE come into the equation too - for example, I never engage Vipers unless I absolutely have to (and I certainly never splash a Viper except in extremis - they're just regular guys doing a rotten job, after all - and they don't have escape pods). Hunch your shoulders and take the hits, and if you cannot evade them, hyperspace out (as unfortunately Vipers cannot follow the player through their wormhole). Get your RoE firmly established, and get your contraband trade rules established - I never buy narcotics at over 10, I never sell at under 70 (and if you're a morally upright person such as myself, never deal in slaves or firearms). If you're playing the game properly, then the old dodge of a few quick jumps to clear your legal status is a complete no-no!
See now, all this is the kind of thing you could develop in a Manual. Along with alternative viewpoints, perhaps. For instance, whilst I agree with you on slavery, I regard firearms as something of a grey area. Overthrowing tyranny often requires being able to counter the firepower arrayed against you, one man's terr'ist is another man's freedom fighter, etc..
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Yeah, maybe... but atm, I've got enough on my plate pushing an OXP out the door, and trying to finish an Oofic!
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Being the kinda guy who fills whatever gaps he can, I present Contra's Art; a selection of notes and quotes transcribed from posts on this forum.
Got all turned around, lost my nav connection... Where am I now?

Nice.. 8) I'd like to contribute a couple of tips EV mentioned to me in a PM. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't mind them being included..
You gotta have a nose for the business, and I couldn't explain that. The best deals are where you buy 32t @1.2, jump out, jump straight back to the same system, and sell @102 - but you may have to fight your way in (and out, of course).

Oh, one tip maybe - I visit a lot of systems that a player wouldn't normally visit - the inbetween worlds (and a well-balanced cluster of systems is handy)!

<dons his curmudgeon's sombrero> In that particular case, no I don't mind. But as a general principle, a PM should be just that... a private message!

As a general principle, I totally agree.. had it been anything other than a simple gameplay tip, I would not have divulged it..

To digress slightly: could rock hermit commodity lists be titled as [system_name] [rock_hermit_name] instead of just the [system_name] (as in this thumbnail)?

Yes, but only by restricting what people are allowed to call their stations

(and that's without the system name)
