Altercation survivors on Remlok

Post by Bugbear »

Blasting my way through my Ooniverse, I sometimes experience pangs of guilt when I destroy an offender or fugitive ship and don’t see an escape pod being deployed. I’m no Han Solo. I (almost) never shoot first, and despite the evidence of my Elite ranking (Dangerous), I do not like to consider myself a murderer.

(Sometimes I wonder if in my game it should be mandatory that all ships be equipped with an escape pod.)

In the absence of mandatory escape pods, would it be safe to assume that all ships come equipped with a Remlok mask for all ship inhabitants? If so, then how cool would it be to see lifeforms of various shapes floating around after an altercation, waiting to be picked up. Isn’t that what the Moray Medical Boat is for after all?

Given the scales (HAH!!!) that exist in Oolite, I’d expect these bodies to be very small – smaller than a cargo pod perhaps.

Has anyone actually seen or drawn pictures of the various Oolite species?

Very interesting idea indeed.. I like the sound of it!

perhaps this should be moved to OXPs for discussion, as I imagine it would be dealt with via OXP.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

This is ... funny.

I just had this idea this morning (I have a scrippling in my notebook to prove that! ) Because I deemed it inpractically to design a single body to float in space out of size considerations, I just thought about doing something like a small cluster of bodies in size of a cargo container.
It would relatively easy to make, as the bodies themself would have to be only a few blocky shapes in this size to get it across, and if you put a handfull of them and a little debris in this cluster you could have a relatively realistic effect, I think.
Oh, and I would put them in a bulky spacesuit, so you could just put a few extra-limbs or two heads on some of them. Voila, instant aliens without too much detail. :)
And I'm starting wings3d right now.

EDIT: Because of totally shitty writing...

You mean something like this poor, unfortunate fellow?

Shipbuilder created this model at my request about two months ago.

Debris.

And as an alternative escape capsule model.

Wildeblood, that is just awesome.. I'm still chuckling..

(speaking scale, how big did you have to make him/her?)

I suppose size would be the main problem, at least if you care about it.

If you just enjoy the game without asking too many questions, you'll be fine.

To digress slightly, you may be interested in NASA's 3d resources which include models of a lot of satellites, rockets, the shuttle and also some astronauts.

Not tried them yet in-game, but the images on the site look lovely (mostly) and should be usable. Files are in various formats, which may or may not cause headaches.

Yes, back on topic.

While the astronaut in his suit looks lovely, I thought the Remlok device would be some sort of mask that covers only the face, not a complete suit?

I got the impression it was like a "shrink wrap" suit plus breather.

And the RemLok screamed through space for help.

Hah!
Remlok was the first thing that I thought of when messing around with Knotty's Felix Baumgartner tribute oxp.

It would be handy to have for those times when the escape pod gets damaged (which usually happens because you're in a situation where you actually need it lol).

A backup for a backup... and the wideband distress message would go out and then the droids come and get you, it would be awesome.

It would also be awesome because that little human model represents YOU.
You would finally get to see yourself in the Ooniverse, (albeit in less than ideal circumstances) that would be crazy.
So then I says to him, I says "naw dude, Oolite ain't no Space Opera... Oolite is Space Rock and Roll!"
