WOw!! Elite???? Hello everyone!

Post by extrec »

Well I dont see too many people here (infact noone is logged on atm) but when I found out about oolite my jaw dropped.
I was so addicted to elite back in the day. I still wait for someone to make a game to come close to it, has not happened. Well X was pretty good...but shallow.

Can you guys reccomend some HUGE expansion pack (or a list of) for me to jump into?

Bigger the better! Game play important too :)

TY!

I was hooked on Elite big time back in the day. I cant believe you amazing people kept this alive for so long!

First off..THANK YOU.

2nd, what do you suggest that I should install for expansions? Are there any collection of packs that work well together?

I cant play it atm, but I am drooling after looking at the screenies.

TY in advance!

EXTREC OUT (LOL THAT MY OLD NAME FROM ELITE! I was such a nerd haha)

Hello and welcome to Oolite's forum - the Friendliest Board this side of Riedquat.

As you noticed in your first post - there was nobody around when you logged on (unusual). We run a "first post approval" system now as spammers were posting some fairly horrible images and links to the forums overnight when (most) of the admins were offline. That's why you couldn't see your first post.

Hi extrec and welcome to the friendliest board this side of Riedquat.
There is a list of OXPs here that you will find useful. It is also sortable to help you locate what you want. There are no 'packs' of OXPs for all sorts of reasons, so you will need to find and download those you want individually.
One strong bit of advice though is not to over-do it! The general 'good advice' is to get used to the core game before adding in anything that will change game fundamentals. Go for eye candy to start with - better ship textures (Griff's ships and my own Smivs'Shipset are both very popular) and planet textures (System Redux and Povray Planets are both excellent), that sort of thing. Many people also like BGS which adds all sorts of ambience.
Enjoy :)

Hey Extrec,

Welcome aboard!

Eye-candy is nice, the griff shipsets are very nice to look at.
The mission oxp's provide a lot of wonderfull game play. Usually they only start when you've acquired enough kills, so you can safely add them.
UPS-courier provides a string of small missions with some surprises.
Your Ad Here provides extra stations (sometimes) near the witchpoint beacon
random Hits adds a seedy space bar in anarchy systems, where you can hire yourself out as a bounty hunter (after you've acquired enough kills)
Galactic Navy adds navy stations and navy ships, will even let you fight against the thargoids. I'd beef up the thargoids as well when you add this one.

Those are the ones from the top off my head.
Can send you a complete list of my addons folder if you're interested.

You're gonna have a blast! Also the forum is a warm and welcoming place

Greetz,
Onno.

Hello again :D
As DaddyHoggy explained, your first post was briefly delayed due to our (very effective) anti-spam measures - don't worry we know you're not spam

Your first post is here. I'd suggest these two threads are merged, if there is an Admin around?

Welcome Extrec to the forum as Smivs beat me to signposting to your first post and now thanks to a listening admin the threads have been merged so here is something completely different...

If your oodles of elite experience has gathered Oose, than flying Oolite oot might be the cure, gather ooftish, trading oorial and oolong, fighting the Thargoid oothecal that ooze lasers and other oobits, while oogling at the OXP's oomph shouting 'Oorah' and avoiding oopsie.

Welcome to the forum extrec I'm sure you will find Oolite a great experience (Same ultra addictive gameplay of the original Elite but with the option to greatly increase the grahics, ships and add missions etc).

As already suggested the usual recommendation to those new to Oolite is to install a few oxps at a time, (generally ones that improve the look of the game - In this respect Griff’s ship-sets I feel are a must), which will allow you to appreciate what each one does and won't alter the way the game plays.

As you become more experienced then I would recommend installing the odd oxp to try it out (If you don't like it you can simply remove it and try another).

You will also be able to find some additional ship oxps in the the ship category list. You can also view a Wiki page of each of the ships in this list which can be very interesting and informative.

And above all if you have any queries just ask. The board is regularly frequented by people with a multitude of different skills who are only too happy to offer assistance.

Increase the variety of ships within your Ooniverse by downloading my OXPs

Hi extrec and welcome to the forum and the Oo-universe.

I myself did exactly what our veterans wrote above.
Install some oxp that improve the look, then later install a few more as you read the forum to find some you like (and honestly, all of those are interesting  ) and play.

I have 130+ oxp installed and keep installing/updating almost every day.

Dude welcome to a most awesome game.

The way I approached oxps was to take it in steps.
First load up on Ambiance expansions (better looking planets, some big npc cruise ships, a new HUD, new sounds and fancy looking ship and station textures).

Then play for a while, getting familiar with the environment.

Then I added system flavour oxps, so "Anarchies" oxp for anarchy systems, Commies oxp for communist system, dictators and the excellent Feudal oxp.

This made my Ooniverse look good and seem more alive.

After that I just got on with the game for another while, now I'm making credits and my ship is getting tougher I'm slowly adding missions.
On the wiki you can arrange the mission list by galaxy and kill requirements, so you can get a nice handful of starter missions like Long Way Around and Tionisla Reporter.

Oh, actually don't forget the most essential oxp, no point in getting any others until you've got this installed.

So then I says to him, I says "naw dude, Oolite ain't no Space Opera... Oolite is Space Rock and Roll!"

Thank you guys for all the replies! While I was waiting for my posts to get approved, Ive been doing quite a bit of researching for what mods to install.

I will be doing as you all suggest and going step by step.

I really dont want to make the game easy. That was part of the fun in Elite.

Wont be able to play till tonight, but I cant wait!

I even have a game keyboard pad (where I can reconfigure the keys) will be perfect for this game.

Ill talk to you guys later. and what an awesome modding community!

Ah yes, I used to have a Nostromo gamepad.. wouldn't mind one for Oolite..
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Welcome extrec.

Do you like shield and damage effects? Try out CustomShieldsv0.83 and it has user selectable features from within the main script so you can tweek it with or without a realistic shield model for the npcs as well as many other features. Enjoy! :)
Take an idea from one person and twist or modify it in a different way as a return suggestion so another person can see a part of it that can apply to the oxp they are working on.
