Sounds like an OXP pitch to me... Scripting to spawn a firestorm of hostile factions with a certain chance of triggering... Anybody think they can handle that?

That would be amazing, I wonder how many ships onscreen blasting away at the same time could the game handle?
Fleet vs fleet, like the navy vs Thargoids or the cops vs pirates and the player right in the middle of their chosen faction's front line.
None of the usual "player saves the universe" stuff, you're just another ship in just another battle in a war you may or may not even care about.

All you have to do is survive the thing.

For all I know it already exists, time to browse navy oxps.

I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

Why not all four? Though for this cops and Navy are essentially identical.

See EV's post above yours. Factions does all four... and much more.

Erm... Not with Thargoids and not in any systems other than Multi-Gov. My idea was more along the lines of massive battles happening ANYWHERE... And now I'm reconciling that concept with my immersive viewpoint...

What's to prevent Thargoids from sending large forces to systems at random? GalNav. If, as in my Ooniverse, stellar space (as opposed to interstellar) has been overrun by pirates, GalNav would be forced to pull back in response to public outcry, leading to a general withdrawal to stellar space and leaving behind sensor buoys. A sudden massive buildup of GalNav wouldn't be too hard to puzzle out, and any smart pirate would wanna get the scoopings from such a battle.

Oh boy. And so I fall further to the dark side. Expect my second OXP soon...

Rese249er - I have been thinking of something along similar lines but using the Cylon Raider I released and probably some new Cylon ships.

I just keep getting distracted by other oxp work from sitting down and learning how to script..............So many oxp ideas and too little time

It's the 'much more' bit - Factions is very customisable (but mostly beyond my ken).

Holy cow, this is awesome! ...and frankly, terrifying.
I had already been having thoughts about multigovernment worlds in a space faring era and how unstable relations would inevitably be.

Needless to say I've been keeping to the edges of the fray but the oxp adds life and narrative to those systems (plus I love being an unimportant speck, slipping through a much larger situation unnoticed).
I remember seeing stuff in the oxp lists about commie systems, gulags etc and anarchies too.
I am now inspired to try to give appropriate character to each system type.

My Ooniverse is really starting to come alive. :D

Before I forget, it's time for another noob question.
Is there any way to change where a laser has been installed?

I had this bright idea to install a mining laser facing aft (ill conceived plan to discourage perusing pirates), however as you can imagine, it makes actual mining... more, uh complex than it needs to be (blasting, then have to full 180 to scoop, by which time splinters are drifting all over the place).

So am I stuck with it?
If there is no way to unequip it and install it in another slot can I buy another laser and place it in the occupied aft slot?
I'm fine with my punishment for hasty placement being more expense, I can mark that down as the fee for a lesson learned lol.
So then I says to him, I says "naw dude, Oolite ain't no Space Opera... Oolite is Space Rock and Roll!"

Yeah, just buy another laser for the aft position - I would strongly recommend Military grade. You will be refunded the cost of the mining laser when you do this. If you still want a Mining laser, put it on one of the side mounts, again replacing an existing laser if there is one there already.

For some good 'sport' within the station aegis, I'd recommend another of maresnest's OXPs (originally by Caracal) - [wiki]Furball_OXP[/wiki] - great fun!

Install TCAT and go to G3 (with a suitably tough and experienced commander) for something you'd like I think...

Um... like, now every kind of system is now super busy with stuff, new stations and ships.

I installed every oxp listed in "dependencies" for the factions oxp, I think I badly misunderstood what was going to happen to my game.
My little Cobra feels so fragile and small among all this activity.

It's a little overwhelming and maybe takes away from the relative solitude of the lanes a bit which I'm still enjoying for now.
Plus I'm far too puny to really get involved with any of it (btw those feudal ships are super sexy, there must be a way to fly one of those beauties, kudos to the designer).

But I'm going to scale it back a bit on the war and politics and shooty-laser-death all around me for now, classic noob mistake I suppose, piling on the addons before getting the basic game down properly.
Right now I just want to fly my ship, make some trades, see some sights (heading to Tionisla next to see the graveyard and chronicle array) and feel like a hero if I survive an encounter with more than two backwater pirates.

But my sincere thanks for all the answers and interesting thoughts, you guys never stop pushing this game I think, it's awesome to be part of community with such passion.

I'm reading The Dark Wheel atm (which won't take long and I see there is plenty more fiction worth reading all over the place) and when I visit a location in the book ingame, later on when recalling it my memory of it kind of merges with the books description and "feel" and it really reinforces the sense of immersion in the whole experience.

What a great welcome I must say, tyvm, anyway I have to go sun skimming now because I have no cash, no fuel and no cargo and a useless mining laser glued to my aft.
That kind of situation is when a commander starts thinking about illegal things and I don't have a hard enough ass for that, yet.

Even a virgin Jameson, without an iron-ass, can work the dark side - it just takes a little guile (and luck, of course), and good flying skills.
Rock hermits are often the ideal places to do that type of business (the selling, that is) - and remember, GalCop Vipers can't follow you through your wormhole.

Good question, and one that has puzzled me for ages - bandits (and hunters, I believe) can. It's something I'd like to see in the game (for Viper Interceptors only, as they are jump-capable, and so could return to their own system), even though it would make my life as a contrabandista somewhat more difficult.
