A group of settlers finally stop at a particular location slightly to the side of their planned location, as the planned location had unpleasant weather.

Title of the book, please.

Clue: Their destination is referred to by a number and a direction, and geographically is part of the United States. Potatoes play an important role in their journey.

The last of eight goes in search of something else which is also the last of eight. Name the book and author.

Against a Dark Background by Iain M. Banks?
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Yup, first book that came to mind. The fact I finished it about 3 hours ago may be relevant here...

Over to you.

One of my favourite Banks novels, is that.

Onwards: a group of people are trapped in a sunken ship (sound familiar?). Title and author, please.

A good tale, is that... but not the correct answer.

There are so many stories that satisfy the description of "a group of people are trapped in a sunken ship", but I'll give it one more try: "Surface Tension" by James Blish?

This is true, so I'll add that the tale in question is set on Earth... and it's not Ray Bradbury's eerie little tale. Another clue this evening.
