Hi.

Here's another crazy idea. I'm not particularly fond of 3D, but it is getting popular. What about a 3D version of Oolite? We can even get spacey with the glasses. :mrgreen:

Sounds like that'd require twice the memory of 2dOolite.
Got all turned around, lost my nav connection... Where am I now?

This subject was discussed back in 2010, here. I initiated the thread.

I would like 3D Oolite. In fact I have a 3D TV now, and it has a mode that converts 2D into 3D. Not sure how that works but I might try it out whilst running Oolite.

I watched the whole of the Olympics Opening Ceremony in 3D, and it was really good. 8)

you just need a couple of ddls in fact, 3d drivers and a 3d monitor... may be some open GL implementation o.o but really doesnt need much

I have a friend with a TV that does this.. he's tried it on several of his 2D-only PS3 games, and the effect is incredibly realistic.

I suspect it would work just as well with Oolite.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

I'm just guessing, but i suspect that each frame would have to be rendered twice from slightly differing viewpoint positions to simulate the left and right 'eye'. You won't need twice as much texture memory because the same models and textures will be used for each render but you will need a graphics card that can do twice as much rendering work each frame (and also possibly some extra image post-processing to blend the two frames together into a stereoscopic image for sending to the monitor- not sure about that bit though - i don't really know how the 3d glasses work - i've just seen the crazy cardboard red & blue lens ones you used to get free with the occasional comic back in the 80's :lol: )

We've experimented at work with 100Hz 3D TVs - some Nvidia cards rendering two 50Hz views shifted in position equivalent to the distance between left and right eye. We've just acquired a 42" 600Hz Toshiba that we're going to run the experiments again using this.

We've tried passive and active TVs and Nvidia drivers designed specifically for this task - results are very subject dependant. Some students liked it, some would throw these glasses off after a few seconds.

It doesn't take much to upset the sync - even the 60Hz (here in the UK) AC from lighting is enough to cause some peripheral flickering that is enough to make some users want to puke up after less than a minute.

I've got a 3D TV (50" LG plasma) which uses the 'shutter' principle glasses. I have no 3D source but it does the 2D to 3D thing.
The couple of times I've tried the 2D to 3D conversion it has not been too convincing and the glasses drive me mad! It's like having a migraine but without the pain.
I haven't tried the 3D with Oolite yet, but will do so just to see. I'll report back.

or of course you have anaglyphic 3d (red-blue),

as I don't have a 3d monitor I often use it to play games like skyrim (where snow looks incredible) I must admit that I havn't tried it with oolite,
I shall do that now...

*edit* nope... iZ3d doesn't work with oolite
