Time Acceleration / Collision detection

Post by mr_homn »

Sometimes when I accelerate times (like waiting for long docking clearance queues), after I go back to normal speed, I find I go right through objects (everything), and cannot dock. I understand Time Acceleration isn't really a feature, so I know it's well known to cause some issues. I probably wont be using it anymore after this, too risky.

Is there any known way to fix this without restarting oolite and therefore losing progress since my last save?

If you press the F (hold the shift key and press f) key you will get a bunch of numbers appear. You will seethe bit TAF:x1.00
this is the time acceleration or even deceleration. While the game is paused press the left and right curser keys and you will see the number change. This is the figure of time in the game, 1.00 is normal time 0.50 is half that and it goes down to 0.06 and anything greater than than 1.00 such as 2.00 up to 16.00 is speeding time up.

The issue with going through things is your framerate. At the time of when you meant to collide with it your computer misses those frames and the next frame you appear you are past the object.

Yeah, I knew about the shift F to see framerate/time acceleration and I was observing it as this occured. Nifty, that. But the problem only happens when I use time acceleration though(sometimes). I was watching my frame rate and it seemed normal throughout, I didn't notice any problems with FPS when going through objects. It just clips right through as if it's not there. And then I am permananently unable to crash into anything or dock or save.

Course once I get some fuel injectors I wont be tempted to accelerate time as much.. :)

Edited: I tried to recreate the bug again and I did.

Accelorated time to 8x as I was approaching main station. Stopped accelorating once I was close enough for the main station to hail me. Got in docking queue.
There was a ship ahead of me that was trying to dock, and when he went in, he didn't disappear. he just sat in there and I noticed he was partially clipping through the station as well. So the clipping bug seems to all objects, not just me. Then I tried to go in anyway just to see what would happen, and I once again clipped right through the station. Frame rate was absolutely steady the whole time at 65-70. I cannot land anywhere now. I go right through planets, ships, stations, everything. Not enough fuel to attempt a witchjump to see if that fixes anything either..

Which version of Oolite are you using?

Very strange - if you have fuel scoops, try sun-skimming then jumping. Also, check the log for any error messages.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

The most recent official release. 1.76.1 for Windows. I'm on Windows 7 if that makes a difference.

El Viejo, I don't have fuel scoops yet, so I can't try it. Just started playing yesterday :)

Checked the log, but not sure what to make of it. I looked around for any nasty errors but didn't notice anything in particular, but can't say for sure so I'll post it here...

Do you get any errors in the log?
You will find it in Oolite/oolite.app/Logs open the Latest file and have a scan through that. Is there anything that says Error or didn't load?

I edited my last post above right when you posted, and pasted my logs.

The only thing that I noticed that said "error" was this:

16:52:38.058 [debugTCP.disconnect]: No connection to debug console: "Connection to debug console failed: 'unknown error.' (outStream status: 0, inStream status: 0)."

something tells me that is unrelated, though.

Just to emphasize: this ONLY ever happens when I time accelerate. So as long as I avoid it I will be fine. But I just wanted to see if there was a solution anyway.

That is harmless and can be ignored.
An odd 'bug', certainly - this dumb pilot has not a clue.

Oolite acts weirdly once the TAF is greater than four. So it seems that with you it gets really weird! But at least you can avoid the issue.

It sounds like an issue for the Devs. But the Error with the Debug can be ignored. It is trying to connect to the developers tool which you do not have installed. It wont do any harm.

EDIT: Somewhat Ninja'd by EV

Ah, that is some helpful info, though. You say it only acts weird when the Time Accelerator is greater than four? Perhaps I will try to see if the bug happens again if I only go to four this time. Last time I went up to 8 and 16 the time before that. I'll report back here when I do so.

Edit: Okay, I tried it again, this time only going up to 4x acceleration, and the same thing happened. Only difference this time is I was able to crash into the planet. But everything else I clipped right through like before. There was one moment when I accidentally went up to 8x acceleration, but I corrected it back to 4x before I unpaused, so I never actually experienced 8x.... I will run the experiment once again though just to be sure, this time being extra careful to not exceed 4x acceleration. Will post what happens in another edit.

Edit: Did it again, made extra sure that I did not exceed 4x acceleration. Same results. I am wondering if this has something to do with the docking queue (I enabled required clearance manually), but I am getting bored of experimenting with this so I'm gonna take a break for now. Back to enjoying the game.

Indeed... good thinking! I see you have Griff's shipset installed - you could maybe add his new Coriolis and Dodo stations too.

Oh cool, I was unaware of those, I'll check 'em out. Thanks.

Is the Coriolis different than the one that was already included in Griff's shipset? It looks the same to me.

Try removing DockLights.oxp and then see if you can reproduce the problem.

It's an OXP which seems to give problems on some peoples systems, and this might be one of them. If it is then you may need to remove the OXP. It's one I'm seriously considering withdrawing from general release.
