Ok this is a bit of an embarrassing one but I’ll ask all the same.
Somehow I have got Gimp in a black and white mode which is preventing me applying any colour to texture files.
In the toolbox menu I can select a colour in the larger colour box however the 2 smally squares below, which identify what is selected for the foreground and background, stay black and white.
Therefore when I try to draw with a colour I can only draw in black and white.
I’m sure this is a simple one to fix but somehow I am missing the solution.
Can anyone advise how I can get back to be able to apply colours ?
Query using Gimp

Try selecting "Image -> Mode -> RGB"?

That was spot on cim thanks very much.
I knew that it would be easy when you know how (No idea how I managed to change it in the first place though)
