This might be a pandora's box, but I was thinking it would be cool to have a custom "paint job" for my commander's ship, something unique to them only. Is there an OXP for this? Or, more extreme, would it be that hard to perhaps make the texture a part of the savefile?
I'm the OXP route is the bes way to go, but I was thinking how fun it would be to maybe have cross-outs for major kills, or perhaps even, The Hand itself .

My Smivs'Shipset includes a 'kit' to make a custom skin for the player Cobra III. There is a variety of colours and patterns available with a selection of decals, and it would also be easy to adapt and modify any of this to suit your personal tastes.
Smivs'Shipset also has multiple textures for most of the default ships, so by copying and renaming one of these you could get an alternative texture for the player ship.
Also my Texture Tutorial on the wiki will give you guidance on how to make yourself a custom texture for any ship.

Commander Smivs, the friendliest Gourd this side of Riedquat.
Just the Cobra III I'm afraid, although I had thought of extending this to all the player-buyable ships when I can find the time
This obviously wouldn't include the (NPC only) sidewinder, which already has two alternative textures.

I think I'll give this tutorial a shot - thanks Smivs .

Notepadd++ is the probably the best text/script editor on the internet for windows. It can determine or be assigned to different programming languages that will colour code the text on screen to make programming/scripting much easier. I would recommend it to everyone, everywhere!
That looks very similar to Notepad 2 (I had previously used this in messing around with scripts in Pioneer), thanks guys I will give Notepad ++ a try
It's the only one I use.
Take an idea from one person and twist or modify it in a different way as a return suggestion so another person can see a part of it that can apply to the oxp they are working on.

Re-posting from my post in the Pitviper thread, here's some useful files for fans of Captain Beatnik's Pitviper, who want to make a custom paintjob for it. It would not be too hard to re-purpose the blank OXP for other ships as well.

I think it is quite laborious an tricky to change the textures of a ship in GIMP having only the ready merged .png-texture file. To simplify the work for all who want to have a custom painted pitviper, I release the original GIMP .xcf file and the original model under a cc-by-sa-licenese. In the original .xcf-file every part of the Paintwork (eg. airlocks, logos, shadows, hull, hulldetails, the eyes and teeth) is on a separate plane and thus it is much easier to make changes. You may download the sources here:
To make things even easier, here is a blank OXP, ready to insert a custom paintjob texture into. It's basically the one I made for the Blackwidow, with the texture deleted and references to the texture and custom name replaced by <insert-shipname-here>. This OXP is based on the Pitviper S.E. model, which has slightly better performance than the stock Pitviper, and 9TC cargo capacity (expandable to 12 TC), as I figure that's the one most people will want. The specs are easily reduced if you prefer the base Pitviper model.
As well adding your custom texture to the Textures folder, you will need to make edits (all clearly indicated) to the following files in the Config folder:
shipyard.plist
shipdata.plist
demoships.plist
If you wish to buy the ship, rather than simply edit a gamesave, you will need to temporarily change the 'chance' in the shipyard.plist from zero to 1.0. You may also want to reduce the techlevel. After buying it, change the chance back to zero to prevent seeing your custom paintjob for sale.
