It’s hardly cheating… in principle you can generate maps like this in Oolite by pressing ! on the map screen, although it’s currently broken.

D'OH! That's why I couldn't get a map to save even after modifying permissions! ;)

I’ve checked in a fix for OS X, but not other platforms. It’s the cost of breaking the dependency on Appkit.
