So how did you find out?
Find out about the early influences of Fatleaf here. Also his OXP's!

You could port Eliza to Javascript (there may already be open source implementations) and use Cabal Common Library's [wiki=http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Cabal_ ... c_Keyboard]Keyboard[/wiki] to have conversations with NPC ships, though.
Seriously? I would have no idea how to do that, but could someone please do so?
Got all turned around, lost my nav connection... Where am I now?

I'm reasonably sure that there is already a JS-Eliza on the intertubes. You should google it.

Eliza-style conversations tend to get boring rather quickly, though.

I wouldn't know how to put it into an OXP. D-mit McLane, I'm a pilot, not a coder!

EDIT: Modify to initiate a player escort if the AI is feeling particularly friendly, or the other way around? Slag, talk to those slow f**kin Oohaul carriers while you're creepin along with them!

<chortles>
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Hmm...me thinks I've heard something similar before...

"I'm a doctor, not a historian"
"I'm a doctor, not a botanist”
"I'm a doctor, not a counterinsurgent”
"I'm a doctor, not a dragonslayer”
"I'm a doctor, not a peeping Tom”
"I'm a doctor, not an engineer”
"I'm a doctor, not a database”
"I'm a doctor, not a battery”
"I'm a doctor, not a performer”
"I'm a doctor, not a zoo keeper”
"I'm a doctor, not a voyeur”
"I'm a doctor, not a bartender”
"I'm a doctor, not a doorstop
"I'm a doctor, not a commando”
"I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer”
"I'm a doctor, not a mechanic”
"I'm a doctor, not a escalator”
"I'm a doctor, not a coal miner”
"I'm a doctor, not an engineer”

They appear to be mostly simple, algorithmic manipulation of the tense, aspect or mood of the input strings, with no attempt whatsoever to analyse the content words.
