If you're gonna do all that, there should be a 'slap-the-controls' option. I imagine some cheapskate, or someone who's been through a really rough furball in the lower-tech systems, may opt for DIY percussive maintenance.

Now, now... Space tape is just as important.

I think we need a short story about the SpaceMythBusters proving that you can build a whole ship completely out of space tape, and sail it from Lave to Zaonce.

Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Very.

(So what chance a DIY-Repairs.OXP that costs n₢ for the toolkit that, when used, gives a x% chance of repairing one of the damaged items, but with a y% chance of damaging destroying a working item? Although every time you use it successfully, the x% does rise slightly. And for the minute it takes to use it, your ship is in 'tumble' mode and cannot be piloted at all, because you are not in the cabin.)

Also should help service level. Not completely replace a service overhaul, but postpone it a great deal.

Hi. I have a feeling I'll get shot here. How does this work again? To explain the question, I just started a new commander in 1.77. I have done nothing except jump from Lave to start trading between Qutiri and Isinor. I have not engaged in combat at all, J-drive out of the main line between witch-point and station. The maintenance message has just appeared after the last jump but I know I have not scratched the paintwork when docking unless it's possible to do that without any sound or shield bars dropping or anything. I've only jumped about 20 times since leaving Lave. Is that expected? ttfn, Rich.

Twenty jumps sounds about right... just hyperspacing causes random wear and tear.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Thanks. Thinking academically about it, how does it work? Random stuff in hyperspace bouncing off the hull? Rich.

I can't explain the mysteries of Witchspace - I was stood at the back when the handwavium-foo was handed-out.

A hyperspace jump could be a ship-bending event in the literal sense, with opposite ends of the ship distorted a tiny amount (like 0.01%) due to a less-than-perfect wormhole. Or entering a wormhole at its edges, where distortion is worse. Even irregular heating of the hull could cause bending stresses, and I'm sure firing the lasers into the red probably can't be good either. The fuel scoop probably collects a lot of debris that needs to be cleaned out as well.

An overhaul could check for microscopic cracks and anneal or re-weld them back to as good-as-new.
