Yeah, it lasted only 25 years. You have to read "The Decline and Fall of the Welsh Empire". It's a quick read at 3 pages.Colonel Wasabi wrote:...and didn't the Welsh Empire fall apart in the year 2342, splitting into the Gogs and Ddebuttys with new capitals in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyllantisiliogogoch and Ystradgynlais ??

Ystradgynlais? That was the next valley from where I lived in Cadoxton. And the next valley may as well be the other side of the world.Colonel Wasabi wrote:Wow ! Small world innit......Eric Walch wrote:Ah 'Ystradgynlais', That rings a bell. Those Wells names are at least easy to remember. Its a little bit south of Abercrave. The town were we always bought our gear when staying at the South Wales Caving Club.
Ystradgynlais is where my mum was brought up and I spent nearly every single school holiday there playing in the woods, climbing tips (and skidding down them on dustbin lids ), damming streams &c &c.
The Job Centre in Neath asked me "How far are you willing to travel for work?"
I said: "Anywhere in the UK, I'll just relocate."
They said "No, seriously, we need to record on the system what area you'll be looking for work."
I said "Yes, seriously anywhere in the UK."
They said "We need a proper answer, look you. Now some people say Swansea but others will look as far as Port Talbot."
I said "Alright, from Swansea to Cardiff."
They said "Cardiff? You are serious, aren't you? I'll just pop that into the computer. There's lovely. You know, most people won't look outside their own valley."
And after a while I could see why - there was no jobs to be had in South Wales anyway. That never gets mentioned as a consequence of the pit closures.

Re: THANKS
I went further than that - I went from Neath to Llangefni (so just 6 miles or so from Llanfairpwll). And there I worked with a chap who had returned to Anglesey after a short spell in Swansea because he "couldn't handle life in the big city". Re: THANKS
Don't feel bad, there are no jobs anywhere in the UK...or Europe...or the world for that matter! Unless you want to hand out food parcels in Athens, but its probably not paid work. And saying that, we should really start advertising for a new Prime Minister because ours urgently needs replacing...SandJ wrote:And after a while I could see why - there was no jobs to be had in South Wales anyway.

Maybe next time they can add an extra box at the bottom that says "TICK HERE FOR NONE OF THE ABOVE" and we can just have five years of anarchy...would be better than a Conservative government. Yes, I know its a coalition but the Liberals are just puppets of Cameron now so they don't count!

You can't. The last lot made that illegal in the last electoral reform bill. They were worried it would catch on.Pleb wrote:Maybe next time they can add an extra box at the bottom that says "TICK HERE FOR NONE OF THE ABOVE" and we can just have five years of anarchy...

I have been at the 'Big Pit' in Blaenavon. At least they employed some tourist guides.SandJ wrote:there was no jobs to be had in South Wales anyway. That never gets mentioned as a consequence of the pit closures.
A first I thought they were telling rubbish. They were talking about the lime layer that was beneath the coal layer. ???? Here in the Netherlands there are chalk layers above the coal layers. Jura was after all after the Carboniferous area.
Only at home I realised these Welsh limestone layers were from a much older period than the limestone at home, from before the Carboniferous when the coal layers were formed in europe. It is the Cambrian period. Called after the latin name of Welsh, probably because the layers from this time surfaces in Welsh. The whole of Welsh 'land' (ocean floor) masses were at that time situated near the southpole. The welsh empire still had to be formed.

And the first really interesting Geological period as far as a record of early life goes. It had Explosions and everything. Wales Rocks!Eric Walch wrote:It is the Cambrian period.
