SmivsTV

Post by Smivs »

Welcome to SmivsTV :D
I have finally got round to looking at screencasting as I've often thought producing a few Oolite videos would be cool.
It's not something I've done before so I'm starting from rock bottom, and I've set myself some fairly high standards. I can now capture the screen using ffmpeg which gives a very good quality, and am starting to play with (actually three) video editors to see which one I like best.
My eventual goal is to post some exciting and spectacular High-def Oolite videos.
Learning the editing software is going to take time so these won't be along for a while, but just as a toe-in-the-water exercise I have produced a 'demoships' parade video featuring my Smivs'Shipset and Accessories OXPs. (Yes, sorry, the first thing on SmivsTV is a commercial!)
I'd recommend selecting HD (720p) and expand or go to full screen. Have a look and let me know what you think of the video in terms of sound and picture etc.

Sound quality is good, and the resolution is also very good. I'm impressed that even at 720p the streaming bar is progressing much faster than the viewing bar.

However, there are visual hiccups in the video. Are they caused by Oolite (do you see them also when not recording?) or by the video capture software? If the latter I'd be interested to know how big a loss of framerate in Oolite the video capture software is causing. Although, the hiccups don't appear to be results of lower overall frame rate. Just that once every couple of seconds the whole thing freezes for a split second, and then jumps to the following frame immediately.

I think it's my computer. I loaded the HD version for the recording and it always struggles with that...I have to use the standard-def version when playing and even that gets a bit stuttery when there are a lot of entities on screen.

Well done Smivs. Like CML said the quality was good. Nice first effort. Now we expect a Thargoid invasion

Well, I'm starting to get the hang of this video malarky!
My first 'proper' film is now ready for viewing on Youtube, and while it is not perfect I'm quite pleased with it as a first effort.
What should have been a quiet trip to Intiso got off to a lively start when I found a bunch of pirates hanging around at the Witchpoint.
Ladies, Gentlemen and Things, I proudly present Ambush at Intiso. I recommend selecting 720p HD and full screen if possible.

Just watched Ambush... and seems to work quite nicely. There were a few crackles in the audio, but nothing major. I think the end credits disappeared too quickly, have those up for a few more seconds.

Suggest next time, use your docking computer, and your Delightful Docking OXP...

On the whole, your flying/combat technique is remarkably similar to mine - my fingers were reacting as though they would if I was playing, and the ship was appeared to be responding! I'd forgotten what the default Oolite sounds were like - I've been playing with BGS for too long.

I found it interesting that you dock fairly slowly. When I dock manually, I line up, and then charge in at full speed, so as I have to make fewer corrections for the rotation.

Oh, and 'twas good video quality as well. Looking forward to seeing more!

Thanks chaps...all useful feedback.
I normally do use the Docking Computer, so that will appear in the next one I expect. My lack of practice also explains the careful nature of my docking...crashing would have been embarrassing :)

There was a brief mention on another thread about the way the Thargoid Annihilator from my Xeptatl's Sword OXP witchjumps.
Because of its size (6Km diameter) it cannot use wormholes, so the Thargoids developed a whole new jump technology just for this vessel.

Watch it here

Nice but you're spoiling the fun ;). I still have to play XS. Now I'm doing the Thargoid Plans mission. Got it just this evening.

I hope not. That jump-out sequence is just one small example of many graphical/visual special effects in the OXP, and is all you're getting :)
A little teaser once in a while is OK I think...not like these movie trailers where you see all the good bits of the movie in 3 minutes. I did some time ago make a five-minute video 'trailer' for Xeptatl's Sword but have never released it for this very reason.

Yep making trailers is an art. Luckily I'm in for a spectacle. Looking forward playing XS.
