Exhaust Flook

Post by mandoman »

I have been experiencing a disorienting situation, sometimes, when I'm in a dog fight doing a lot of direction changes. This doesn't happen all the time, but has several times. I'll be in the middle of a direction change, dodging a missile, when all of a sudden my exhaust plume appears in front of the ship, and the ship starts moving backwards. I took a screen shot of the last time it happened.

As you can see, the ship was basically bassackwards, and I had to just ride it out until it corrected itself. Kind of puts a crimp in defensive, and offensive manoeuvres.

Do you have Military Fuel Injectors installed? Or something like that?

Yeah, but I wasn't using the fuel injectors at the time. I rarely do in a dogfight.

I am guessing it is oxp related. What do you have in your folder?

Had you rammed or bumped anything? That can cause your ship to travel backwards... good fun, is that.
I've no idea how that would affect the drive plumes, though.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Nope. didn't hit anything. It's the same way every time it happens. Suddenly the exhaust plumes are in front, and the ship is going backwards. Kind of disorienting.

I have experienced something similar but only immediately after using injectors - the ship continued it's movement a la Newton's geodesic no matter which way I oriented my ship for several seconds.

I've experienced a bit of a rush, trying to get my speed under control. Those military injectors really pump up the fuel injection. However, what I experienced in the screen shot above had nothing to do with fuel injectors of any kind. I don't know, maybe it has something to do with the OS I'm using, which is Ubuntu. Should I take this to the Oolite/Linux board instead of here?

I know it's not quite the same thing but It's happened with Ubuntu and XP (not the 'rush' - the Newtonian flight) but that was some weeks ago and it hasn't happened since???

Okay, then I'm not alone. I guess it isn't a big deal, as it doesn't happen often, but I thought the Oolite development crew might want to know. It's probably nothing.

I was disappointed that I couldn't reproduce it! I thought it would be handy for strafing pirate coves and the like... lol

I have see this myself, but only under specific circumstances, namely travelling at ultra-high speed.
There is a quirk of the game that causes this if you turn through 180 degrees at very high speeds. Doing this leaves the ship travelling in the same direction it was, but facing backwards, and the exhaust appears to come from the front of the ship as it points away from the direction of travel, not the back of the ship. Indeed if you do a 90 degree turn and use external views, you can see the exhaust pointing up or down!
This will not happen in the normal game and therefore suggests that you have some OXP related issue, specifically relating to the ship travelling at ridiculous speeds.
(This is one reason I have an un-released 'Turbo-Boost' OXP sitting on my computer :( )

Hmmmm, that sounds familiar. I think I was just coming out of Hyperdrive when I made that turn in the screen shot above. I suppose hyper speed could be called ridiculous. It really wasn't one of my faster ships, otherwise.

The mil fuel injectors could do it on the instant you stop using them, and of course the retro-rockets will do it every time (as your ship then is physically travelling backwards through your jet exhausts). Personally I've always found it quite a nice effect.

It wouldn't be bad if I didn't notice that the whole ship was backing up do to the phenom. I know it was backing up, and really fast, as I watched the Rock Hermit I was harassing running away from me. At first I actually thought the Rock Hermit WAS accelerating ahead of me, until I noticed the exhaust plumes covering my front view screen.
