The search index is updated, you can now find pages that contain, e.g., "Zaquesso".
Sweet! Many thanks, your Wizardliness!

Question about MediaWiki extensions: what are your thoughts on
  • embedding video - pagroove, Smivs, and possibly others link to videos from their OXP's wiki pages. There is an extension which would allow to embed the videos on the wiki page.
  • ratings - the topic of which OXP is recommended comes up frequently. There is an extension which provides ratings for wiki pages on which you include it. It also provides top 10 lists etc. If you include this on all OXP pages then people can rate the ones they use. OXPs without a wiki page would get left out though.

Great work Maik.

One thing I have noticed is that the uploaded files (or at least some) are missing. Particularly those on the Planet List page

Thanks, PhantorGorth.

I already have local copies of the non-image files from the alioth.net wiki. I just wonder if I should actually upload them to the new wiki or rather put them on a box.com account. I do not believe non-image files belong on a wiki.

What are your thoughts on this?

Cheers,

I don't think non-documentation files belong on the wiki, so OXPs should probably go elsewhere, but the tools on the planetinfo pages are to me part of the documentation and make sense on the wiki.

Embedded video sounds good.

OXP rating I'm less sure about - in my opinion the standard of OXPs is generally very high, so a numeric rating alone probably won't be that much use. It's much more about "does this OXP fit with the style of play I want" rather than "is the coding/graphics/etc up to standard".

I agree with Cim the Planet List page files are generally documentary in nature. Also a Box account would be your box account rather than a "public" space and I would be back to the situation I have with not being able to update it like I can't at the moment.

I agree with what cim and PhantorGorth say: the wiki should not be a general space for files but serve as documentation and the planet info files are documentation.

Now, I dont want to open the wiki for any kind of non-image file. Which file extensions do you need?

Would a tarball of the wiki and a database dump of wiki.alioth.net be helpful to you?

You can continue to host it on the alioth.net server if you like. Someone just needs to ask for an ssh login.

(Please direct replies to dyls at alioth.net rather than the BBS, I'm not a frequent reader)

Thanks for the offer, Winston! I'll put the rest into an email!

Edited to add: I emailed Winston, asking to give some insights into what he likes to do and what not with regards to the Elite Wiki and post it here on the BB himself. That would give us all a good decision basis for further action or a good reason for not having to do anything at all.

I have researched a bit more. The file that you are referring to is actually a zip file. This is by default even blacklisted by MediaWiki and I don't want to change this. I propose you open a box.com account and host it yourself, like most OXP authors do. Then you have full flexibility with regards to updates.
