Better computer voice and jump effect

Post by Alien Cmdr »

Hi all,

Firstly may I say that I have full respect to Giles Williams and all those who made Oolite, I could not have done it. What I am about to say are suggestions so please don't take them as criticisms.

1. Improve the computer voice.
It's a great feature even if it sounds like Microsoft speech, but it talks too fast. All the words are said together with no space between them. Is it possible to slow it down a little, put some space between each word? This would make what it says clearer and easier to understand.

2. The jump tunnel
It looks like something from Loony Tunes. Is it possible to have the star lines jump effect from Star Wars? Even if this is done as an OXP it would look so much cooler.

I hope I am not asking too much.
Once again, thank you to all those who made Oolite and the OXP's, keep up the good work.

Hi Alien Cmdr and welcome... the hyperspace sequence is much improved by the [EliteWiki] BGS OXP (if your machine supports shaders, that is). BGS also includes great screens, ambient sounds and voices. This was taken (facing the sun) just before the countdown finished:

I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Hello Alien Cmdr,

I heartly agree with you when it comes to the Jump effect... I've played all sort of Elite incarnations along the years (beginning with Acorn Electron Elite eons ago :) and from the begining, i though this incredible line of games deserved better jumping effects.

Speaking of it, one important point i see is the identical nature of interstellar and intergalactic jump. It could be a good idea to make the intergalactic take a longer time and have a different visual and audio feeling.

For me, it's always disapointing when after begining a new game, you make the first Intergal. jump to find that there is no difference with the standard interstellar jump... I'm always expecting a supercharging effect, a roar, a bang, a flash... something that hints at space motors pushed to the limit, and then :( :(

Hi Alien Cmdr, and welcome.
For what it's worth I have the computer voice switched off. It can get rather annnoying and I have Mrs Smivs bending my ear all day - I don't need a computer nagging me as well :D

I'm with the pumkin on that one: voices off. If the magic voice had a touch of [Gilles de la] Tourette syndrome, howe'er . . .

I think the Galactic jump is longer in duration... or is that from another game?
