I post this for the board in general - but especially for Selezen and Thargoid.

And this one, which warms the cockles of my cynical heart. British teddy bears doing proper science. 8)

I would love to know what impact this experience has on the later lives of the 12 year olds that were involved with the project.

'Cos science is like, you know, all boring, innit? And we never learned nuffin' interesting at school.

I dunno, even teddy bears can do something I've always wanted to do but probably never will. There ain't no justice! :(

Thanks, although I'd already read it at source (I'm as much a denizen of Vulture Central as you are ;) )

Coincidentally I've just had a chat with a friend of mine about our respective Lego Space collections we had as kids and I've just used LDCad to virtually rebuild a few of mine. Which got me to thinking if there might be a way to export the models as Oolite models.. would be pretty nifty to fly my old 918 around.. :)

That is exactly how I felt when I first saw the story!

What I have been thinking this past few weeks is about the Raspberry Pi. I have had a chat with someone at Manchester Uni about using them in oceanographic research - the power requirements are low enough and the biggest problem with expensive oceanographic equipment is the high rate of loss and consequent cost. You can afford to lose a few Raspberry Pi computers.

But what could you do with one attached the a helium balloon - never mind taking a few photos - attach a Geiger counter, thermisters, pressure sensors, GPS tracker, etc and be able to capture, process and store this data in real-time using the Raspberry Pi and solid state storage for the data.

If you lose the gubbins, what the hell, it didn't cost that much to build. (And having proved it in principle, sell it in kit form. Or just open-source the design.)

So maybe you can't go yourself, but you might be able to do the next best thing.

Awesome! Thanks for that. Wonder if the little guy will get his name in the books of people who have gone to space... ;-)

They got some lovely photos and video too.
