Ditto, Maegil, great tale.
You'd be a great person to have a beer with and talk with until the wee hours. I also have a daughter that you might like to meet.

Re: Shiver me timbers!
I'm sailing off solo to Brazil in a little while and should be out of touch for about a fortnight.
In the meanwhile, I've managed to get the Tabaski pics but can't upload them now, so it'll have to wait until I arrive.
Cheers, and a Happy New Year to all!

You know those who, having been mugged and stabbed, fired, dog run over, house burned down, wife eloped with best friend, daughters becoming prostitutes and their countries invaded - still say that "all is well"?
I'm obviously not one of them.

I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Say hi to Queequeg, Daggoo, and Fedallah and when you're full on oil just head to port.
Take an idea from one person and twist or modify it in a different way as a return suggestion so another person can see a part of it that can apply to the oxp they are working on.

Re: Shiver me timbers!
Hi, everybody, thanks for the good wishes, but... I'm back!
On the departure day, I felt "something", but didn't know what it was. As it got worse, I soon found myself feverish from an ear infection, so I spent the last two days beating upwind back to Dakar, on antibiotics...
It's nothing serious, and if I had been further out returning would have been impracticable, which would have meant that I would have to continue regardless of health conditions... in a life-threatening situation, I'd have to resort to calling a passing ship for an emergency medical evacuation or even activate the EPIRB, forfeiting the boat to salvage.

Perhaps you should invest in an escape capsule
On a serious note, glad you're OK. Take care.

Re: Shiver me timbers!
Life rafts are mandatory items, as are life jackets, flares, first aid and pharmacy kits, etc., but all these are for declared emergencies; safety precautions are still the best choice regardless of whatever contingencies you may have prepared for.
