Oolite on Windows 8

Post by Gimi »

Been testing Oolite on Windows 8 Developers Preview

Image Image

I'm running Windows 8 Developers Preview on VMWare Workstation 8.0.1 (Virtual Machine)

So far so good with no issues or problems. Also nothing indicated in the log. I have been testing with a clean Oolite 1.76 install with no OXP's.
What is quite surprising is that I get full shader support and texture detail with a frame rate of between 75 and 99. I expect that to drop dramatically when I start installing OXP's. The graphics drivers on the VM are as follows. (From the Oolite log)
23:17:50.461 [rendering.opengl.version]: OpenGL renderer version: 2.1.0 ("2.1 Mesa 7.11-devel"). Vendor: "VMware, Inc.". Renderer: "Gallium 0.4 on SVGA3D; build: RELEASE; ".
23:17:50.461 [rendering.opengl.extensions]: OpenGL extensions (113):
<snip>
23:17:50.490 [rendering.opengl.shader.support]: Shaders are supported.

Because I'm running this on a virtual machine under VMWare. So, when I bring in OXP's with higher memory, graphics and CPU demands, I expect the VM to struggle. I'm actually very surprised that it runs as well as it does. I tried this on a Win7 VM under VMWare Workstation 7, and that gave some rather disappointing results. With Workstation 8, results have been far better, both with Win7 and Win8.

Also, in general, quite a few OXPs put some heavy demands on the system (especially the graphics card). So restraining the amount of OXPs is good for preserving performance.

Hello there fellow commanders, Newbie to this forum but not a Newbie to Oolite. Have just got a new laptop, running Windows 8 and downloaded the latest version of Oolite to it. Played a few time up to competent when lo and behold my save files have gone missing. They do not show at all in the Load option, but if I use the save option the files are there because it warns me not to overwrite the existing files. I can see the files in the oolite.app/oolite-save folder, but I can't access them. HELLLLLPPPP!

Greetings, salutations and welcome etc.

Which folder have you got Oolite installed under? Is it in program files or somewhere else like c:/Oolite or somesuch?

Hmm, shouldn't be affected by the odd things that Windows does with C:/program files then. But as a final test, can you run Oolite as administrator and see if you can see the save games then?

Additionally the strangest thing is, I had been playing for a few days on and off and had saved and loaded several times with no problems whatsoever. I have tried reloading the game, no dice.

Have tried as administrator, files are still missing...

The only other thing I can think of is if you've editted them or something, and they've accidentally gained hidden extensions on their end (for example if Jameson.oolite-save has become Jameson.oolite-save.txt).

If that's happened then the game won't see them, but it can be fixed by renaming them properly again. Not sure if Win8 explorer can still be set to hide known extensions, but it may be worth confirming that isn't on and the filenames are what they should be.

If not that then sadly I'm out of ideas...

Had no reason to edit them at all, one day it worked one day it didn't. PLUS if I start the game and make up a random name and save the game, that file disappears but I can see it in the correct directory.. I am totally confused.. :?: :?

Likewise I'm afraid. Can't help much more as I'm on Win7 rather than Win8, but those I quoted are the most common sources of save-game file issues under Windows generally.

Hopefully one of the others who has access to Win8 may be able to help further or have more ideas.

Thanks for trying, I will have to stay competent. I may try moving the file doing a complete un-install and then a reload, it may be related to windows somehow.
