We have a winner! Michael Swanwick seems to me to be under-rated, at least over here ... his novella Griffin's Egg is well worth getting hold of, if you can find it. Vacuum Flowers is a terrific read, too. The Iron Dragon's Daughter and The Dragons of Babel are really quite fierce pieces of genre-crossing science-fantasy ...Zieman wrote:Stations of the Tide by Michael Swanwick?

Clue 2:
One of the factions is used as sort of "imperial shock troops" by a powerful alien race, with which another human faction is allied with.

I would have said "The left hand of darkness" by Ursula LeGuin, but that's from the 70's
Within weeks they'll be re-opening the shipyards

This one is quite recent.
Clue 3.5: Another faction is working hard as a 'client' for an other alien race.

Hmm... is it Seeds of Earth, by Michael Cobley?
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

An easy one: an exclamation of astonishment... or an exhortation to purchase a gas giant?
